I sat stabbing at my food on my plate during lunch. Lauren took notice and grabbed my hand, stopping me from mutilating my mashed potatoes more than I already had.
“Are you okay?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah…. just thinking.” I paused and then looked up at her. “We should do something tonight. Just so I can get out of my house,” I suggested.
It was Friday after all. That meant I could stay out later and my mom would freak out… too much. Never mind that I was legally an adult at 18 years old. That didn’t mean I got to have more freedom than I did when I was 12.
“I heard this really cool new movie just came out. It’s about mutant teenagers with super powers trying to take over the world, or something like that anyway. We could go.”
“And afterwards crash at your place?”
“That bad?” she asked.
“My mom’s been in a mood lately,” I told her. “I’d rather not have to deal with her.”
“Okay. Movie night it is.”

I don’t exactly know why, but I felt the need to dress up to go to the movies. I fixed my hair and everything, and even put on lip gloss. It wasn’t like there was going to be anyone there to impress, and Lauren sure wasn’t going to care, but I didn’t want to go looking like the slob I had been earlier in the day.
She was outside waiting for me in her car by the time I was done. I yelled good-bye to my mother so she knew I was leaving and practically jogged to Lauren’s car. It was a nice car too. While my mom wouldn’t let me drive hers, Lauren’s mom bought her a brand new one. Then again, they had a lot more money than my parents did.
We drove in silence and sat staring out the window at all the lights. They looked pretty all lit up at night with their bright, vibrant colors glowing in the darkness. All too soon though we arrived at the movie theater and I got out and followed Lauren inside.
After we had paid for our tickets and went in line to get popcorn.
“Want anything else?” Lauren asked.
She was the one paying for snacks, because I didn’t remember to bring extra money.
“Not thanks. I’m fine,” I answered.
We got out popcorn and turned around to find our movie only to find Tori instead, and she wasn’t alone. Standing next to her was a taller brunette with very blue eyes and a low cut top. She was very pretty, I couldn’t deny that, but not as much as Tori.
