She impressed me that morning. Solange was an ace on four wheels. She could do spins, jumps, twists, ride railings, and there didn't seem to be anything she couldn't do on a board. That sure blew away my original idea that she was a simple geek. I think she was showing off, but it worked. I couldn't stop complimenting her skill as we made our way to the roof top.
"I can't believe a bookworm like you can skate like that." We were laughing by the time we made it up the stairs. Elevators were not working.
She beamed. "After my mother passed away, I was pretty much raised by guys. My cousins taught me how to skate since I was 6. After a while I got really into it"
"That's cool. At least you know how to skate, unlike me that falls whenever I don't have a camera in my hands." She laughed and it was a contagious laugh.
"So you like taking pictures?" She asked me as I made my way to the railing to look down at the college and started taking some shots. I felt her presence behind me, but for the first time I wasn't bothered like I usually am.
"Yea, it has always intrigued me how the entire world can be captured in a single picture. My dad still thinks that this is just a past time. I could care less what that man thinks." I took a picture of a falcon landing on the highest point of one of the buildings.
We stayed quiet after that. She seemed really relaxed until I asked her if she wanted to try taking some pictures. Almost dropped my camera, but managed to catch it in time. That was when we started hanging together more. We made Saturday morning board and picture a ritual. Solange would skate till the asphalt got uncomfortably hot and then we'd head for the roof top of every other building. She tried to get me on the board a few times. All I did was fall until I almost broke my camera and we decided to just leave things as they were.
It was near the end of the summer session when I got my room assignment and realized I'd lucked out; I didn't have a roommate. Solange had been mentioning that she wanted to move into the dorms, but she didn't want to be on the old dorms, which completely sucked. We were having lunch just before exams week when I decided I didn't like the idea of living alone.
"Sol," I asked between bites of the cookies my mom had send me on my birthday,"would you like to room together?"
I thought she was going to choke. I should have waited until she'd finished swallowing her bite of burger. She put down her burger and took a huge swing of coke. She blinked back the usual tears from just having something try to dive down the wrong pipes and coughed. "You mean it?" She looked at me like I'd just opened the gates to paradise for her.
"Yea, I mean I don't have a roommate and you are looking into moving to the dorms." I shrugged. "We get along, and there's a chance they'll stick me with some stuck up brat at the last minute. At least with you, I know this year I'll like my roomie."
She smiled; the only thing ruining this award winning picture moment was those damn glasses. "You don't mind sharing a room with a bookworm?" The way she said it made it sound like she was ashamed.
Laughing I punched her lightly in the arm, "Nah, I read from time to time and you will save me a walk to the library."
