Hunter looked up and saw Joy standing there smoking.
Alex squirmed and Hunter released him.
"We weren't kissing." Alex protested with a red face.
"Oh, really.'' Joy smirked. "Then why are you in his lap."
Alex somehow turned more red as he scrambled out of Hunter's lap. Hunter was thankful
of his tan skin which hid his blush.
Joy spinned around a couple times then left back inside the bakery.
"She's odd." Hunter said.
"She's been my best friend since kindergarten.
"Oh"
"But, yeah, she's odd." Alex laughed.
"I don't have any friends." Hunter said sadly.
"I'm your friend."
The sat in silence as Alex thought of what to ask Hunter. He had known him for a while
but barely knew anything about him. He didn't like it. He watched a cat run past in the parking
lot. He wondered who in St.Coldsville had left that poor cat to fend on it's own in this cold
weather. He wanted to get up and get it but by then the cat was already gone.
"If you were the last person on Earth what would you do?" Alex asked after a while.
Hunter flinced. "Um. Next question please."
"Wha-" Alex started to protest but after seeing the look on Hunter's face he said fine.
"What do you spend the most time thinking about."
"You." Hunter thought but said, "The normal things people think about."
"And what is that?"
"Things." Hunter said coldly.
Alex groaned. "What would you do if you knew you were going to die in one hour?"
"I'd be happy that I could finally be able to experience it." Hunter muttered.
"Huh?"
"Nothing, nevermind."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?"
"That." Alex guestered towards all of Hunter.
"I do not understand."
Alex tried one more time. "If you could make a 20 second phone call to yourself at any
point in your life present or future, when would you call and what would you say?"
"Don't invite Abe to the movies." Hunter said seriously.
"Abe, like Abe Lincoln?" Alex jokingly
"Yes, exactly, Abraham Lincoln."
"You knew President Abraham Lincoln?" Alex asked, skeptically.
"Yes, we were close friends.""Oh, right, I forgot you're a vampire." Alex said unamused.
"It's fine if you don't believe me. Most people don't."
"You're a vampire?"
Hunter nodded.
"And you drink human blood?
"Yes, I do."
"Really? What's it taste like?" Alex exclaimed, like he was fascinated.
Hunter smiled. "It's quite sweet. Like honey."
Alex opened his mouth to speak but closed it. He shook his head and got off the ground.
"I'm done." He said while wiping the dirt off his butt.
"I'm done with this." He repeated.
Hunter looked up at Alex confused.
"You know, I actually thought you were a cool dude." He took in a deep breathe. " But I
try to talk to you, get to know you, and you just kinda brush off my questions. And you keep
going on about this vampire thing. At first I thought, you were like just joking, so I played along,
but now I see you're really sticking to this story. So you're either crazy or a really bad
pathological liar and, right now, with all the stuff I'm having to deal with already with my dad, I
don't need that in my life. So, Hunter. I'm done."
Alex stood there for a second, maybe he was waiting for Hunter to do something.
Hunter opened his mouth to speak. To say something, anything. But what could he say?
Should he lie to Alex, tell him he was just joking the whole time. Maybe he could say he was feeling sick and that was why he was acting this way. But, was it really smart to lie right now?
Alex said he didn't want that. So then, what did he want?
"Alex, I..." He wasn't sure what he could do to make this right. "I just... I-"
"What, Hunter? What are you trying to say? I just want to talk to you. You can't stay
silent! Speak up!" Alex yelled.
Hunter looked down at his outstretched feet. He wasn't sure about anything at the
moment. He wasn't even sure what had happened. He thought it was going good.
"You have nothing to say? That's good. Anything that came out of your mouth would
probably be lies about your past anyway." He turned and walked away. Away from Sinclair's.
Away from Hunter. Walked away with tears in his eyes, but he wasn't too sure why he wanted to
cry.
