Chapter 13

Tobias lingers over me. I can see that guilt settles in his eyes. Peter has a large gash on his thigh, just above his right knee. I check his pulse with my two fingers touching his neck. A pulse. A small sence of relief passes through me.

"Is he..." Tobias stops speaking. He swallows his words. His face shows no emotion.

"No, he's alive. He must have passed out." I take Tobias's hand but he pulls it away.

"Just take the keys and leave him. We'll ask him questions later." Tobias starts walking away. Anger pushes into me.

"Tobias you can't just leave him here!" I yell. He whips around.

"Tris, he was about to kill you! Did you want him to survive? If I didn't shoot him you would have been dead!" He lashes out at me. He has a point and I can't argue with that. We have to stick to the plan.

"Nevermind....let's keep going." I say calmly. He nods. We walk to the gate but at a distance from eachother. The keys shake in my hand. I look through the jumble of keys and find that they're labeled. Why would they be labeled?

Tobias doesn't speak as I insert one of the keys into the gate. It bothers me to see him this way. I wish he would be much more open about himself. Lately he hasn't. The gate opens and squeels. Tobias walks a little closer to me as we quickly walk faster and faster to the main Eruite building. More memories rush through my head as I come to the place where I once visited Caleb. Where I once came face to face with Jennine Matthews. Where I almost died. I find my free hand on my stomach while my other is on the gun. Tobias motions, me towards a place to take cover. We come behind the main building corner and I peek through the side.

"No sign of guards." I whisper. Tobias, aganist the wall next to me, nods but keeps both hands on his gun like it's a piece of gold.

"The doors to the Eurite building are right here. Should I go in first?" I ask.

Tobias glances at me, his eyes sparkel in the moonlight.

"No." He says. "I'll go in first." His confidence assures me.

He pushes off the wall and sprints over to the main door. I follow behind him. He busts open the door with his body. The door slams open and sends a chill through my veins.

Like I said earlier in the hotel, more guards awaite us in the lobby of the building. Too many for us to possibly stop. With Tobias next to me he grabs my hand and holds it tightly. He slowly steps infront of me as if wanting to protect me and the baby. I'm not sure what to do so I just hold on to my gun with my free hand that Tobias is not holding. A guard steps forward and Tobias stands his ground. The guards gun aims at Tobias's head. I swallow down the lump in my throat.

"I am the... son of Evelyn. We just want to speak to her." He hesitates at the word "son". The guard squints his eyes at us as if not to believe Tobias. I'm fearful that Tobias's plan isn't going to work. Will it? I'm unsure.

"Why should we believe a couple of teenagers?" His smart mouth makes Tobias clench his fist.

"Let me see her now!" Tobias loses his patiants and lunges for the guard.

"No, Tobias!" I cry out his name despreatly, not wanting him to get hurt.... or shot.

The guard doesn't fire his gun. Tobias punches the guard in the jaw, making him fall to the cold, hard ground. I'm stuck standing in the same spot I was when we entered the building. Too many guards crowd Tobias for him to do anything. I realize my gun is still in my hand. One of the guard thrashes his way to me. Be brave Tris.

The trigger to my gun feels cold against my finger. I can't hesitate. I pull the trigger. The man comes tumbeling down. I find myself feeling confident now that I may be able to help Tobias. I don't know how many bullets are left in my gun but I shoot. I shoot anyone who comes near me or Tobias. He becomes free from the grip of the guards and picks up his gun and shoots more guards that are entering the lobby.

At least four more guards come to us. I pull the trigger but no more bullets are left. I panic and stumble to Tobias.

"There's no more bullets left in my gun." I say.

He looks at me with aww.

"There's none left in mine either." He says. The cold, winter air makes my muscles useless and I can't push myself to fight anymore. Two guards push me to the ground face first. I put my hand around my stomach so the impact of hitting the floor won't hurt the baby. I glance over Tobias to where he's weak too. He's pinned to ground.

"Don't hurt her!" Tobias yells.

I moan in exhaustion.

"Don't hu-" before he can finish his sentence, one of the guards kicks me in the thigh and I scream in pain. They grab my arms and they pull me up from the floor. Tobias yells at them again.

"I'll kill you! You horrible people! I will!" The two guards dressed in black take me and Tobias into the hallway. Tears pour down my cheeks. I look down to the floor. I'm too afraid to look at Tobias. The guards make us stop by a white, metal door. The door shutters open. The guards shove me in, one of them pressing the palm of their hand into my once wounded shoulder. It's still a little sore and a chill goes through my spine. Tobias is forced in with me. He tries to punch one of the guards but fails as he's kicked in the knee and falls to the ground. The door slams shut. Silence fills the emptyness that surrounds us in the dim, cold room. I can't do anything more but to feel defeat. He gets up slowly and sits on one of the two chairs in this four-walled room. I don't see any cameras in the room which is good. For some reason I feel too weak to move. My joints stiffen but my muscles throb in my body. Before he looks at me I fall to the floor. I land on my left side.

"Tris!" Tobias says nervously. He stumbles to me.

"Tobias." I croaked, my voice low.

"I'm too... weak and cold. I need-" I don't understand why, but I black out. My body aches in weakness.
