It's been a couple of days since I've been with Frank. It's been a mindless game of trying to keep him happy. Ive been keeping my complacent zombie act up; doing whatever he asks, nothing more and nothing less. But after a few days of being inside doing the same thing over and over was starting to take a toll on me. It was almost the end of summer and there was nothing I wanted more than to enjoy a day outside. I think the sun would be beneficial for my mental state. I was so afraid of Frank, I wasn't even sure how I could bring it up without him making a big deal about it.
We were sitting at the kitchen table after breakfast when I decided to bring it up.
"Hey, do you think I... we... could go outside today?" I said barely audible.
He gave me a funny look. "Why do you want to go outside all of a sudden?"
"I can't remember the last time I was able to enjoy a day outside. Being inside all day, everyday, is something new for me. I used to always enjoy my time out in the open when I could. I, I kind of miss living." My voice was a little shaky. I didn't want to upset him, but I also couldn't stand another day stuck inside with my captivator.
He didn't say anything. He sat for a moment, maybe debating in his head to decide if it was worth it. After what felt like ages, he stood up and disappeared upstairs. He finally came downstairs with one of his arms hidden from my sight. I almost regret bringing it up, because the second I realized what he was hiding from me, it was too late.
He grabbed my arm and locked a handcuff onto my wrist, with the other side connected to his own.
"Is this really necessary?"
"I can't fully trust you yet. I would love to believe you wouldn't try anything, but I know better than that."
"I think I change my mind then..." The cuff was digging into my skin. I tried to ease the pain with my other hand, but it was no use.
"No, I think you're right. I think going outside would be good for us. Being cooped up all day isn't healthy. Let's go enjoy some fresh air."
"Can you at least loosen the-" I started to say, but was cut off by him dragging me towards the door.
There were beautiful French doors that led to the backyard connected to the kitchen. The view of the yard was breathtaking. I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't so focused on the pain in my wrist.
There was a stone path leading to a gazebo. Surrounding the gazebo, were beautiful, red flowers. There was a bench near the garden filled with a variety of colors and flowers. I couldn't stop staring in awe, and Frank smiled at my reaction. He spun me so I was facing him, and wrapped his free hand around me. "I can tell you like it. And I'm glad. Because I did this all for you." he said silently by my ear.
I didn't just like it, I loved it. This was a dream come true, if you remove Frank from the scene. It was like I had stepped into an episode of an HGTV show.
I was speechless. I just nodded at whatever he said. I was in such awe that I couldn't even focus on the words coming from his mouth.
"This is beautiful" I said without realizing.
"So are you," Frank whispered. He smiled and slowly leaned in closer to me. In sheer panic, I laid my head on his shoulder.
Maybe I should start playing his games again. He always ate up any positive attention I gave him. I would have to play smart to get on his good side without him getting wary of my intentions. I'm going to have to sacrifice a lot just to be able to enjoy anything without him needing to handcuff me.
"You really did all of this for me? This is seriously everything I've always wanted," I picked my head up and looked at him. Our eyes met, and I paused. I've never seen his eyes in the natural light. With the sun shining, it brightened the hazel color. It was almost enough to make me forget about to horrible person they were connected to.
Frank smiled. "This is just the beginning of the things I've done for you. I'm so happy you like it."
We went on a small walk around the perimeter, where he was showing me all the different ideas he wanted to add. He wanted to build a shed, add a vegetable garden, and a few other things that adults enjoy having in a prize-awarding-yard.
After our short tour, we sat on the bench and chatted about nothing and everything. If you took away the handcuffs, Frank was just a regular guy with normal goals and dreams. It was a shame that the sweet and caring guy that was deep down inside him, was hidden by a beast that took over control.
...Did I just call Frank a sweet and caring guy? There was no way that thought went through my head. I needed to get out of this place.
"I need to go inside for a second, do you need anything?"
"No, but I don't really have a choice but to follow," I said, holding our hands up, showing the cuffs.
Frank frowned for a second. "That's right. I'm sorry about this,"
Without saying anything, he unlocked the cuff on his arm and attached it to the bench we were sitting on. He stood up and stretched.
"Are you joking?" I asked, almost a little too pissed.
"I'll be right back, I promise." He started walking towards the house, which had a little distance from the bench I was sitting on.
I almost yelled, but I was cut off by something vibrating. I looked down and gasped. Frank's phone fell out of his pocket when he stood up. I couldn't see who was calling because the screen was facing the ground. I tried to reach with my foot, but I was just out of range. I almost dislocated my shoulder trying to move closer with my leg, but I was eventually successful.
I knew I had to be quick, I didn't know how much time I had left before Frank would be back. The phone stopped ringing the second I was able to get it into my free hand. I looked at the missed call on the lock screen and immediately dropped the phone.
It was Gerard.
