Mark stared at him in shock. He couldn't form any sort of words to begin to describe any of his feelings at this moment.
Sean kept looking at him hopefully, it was fading slowly the longer the other man gaped at him. Sean was emotionally drained. He just wanted Mark back. He knew it wasn't going to be easy but he wanted to at least try.
Mark took a step back and tried to even out his panicky breathing. Sean didn't make a move because he didn't want to put too much pressure on Mark.
Mark made a move to shut the door and Sean didn't stop him. He knew this was a bit much, especially after all he has been putting him through.
"Sorry," Sean mumbled as the door shut. He walked off and back home. He silently cursed at himself for forgetting to put on a jacket, this decision was so last minute he was lucky he remembered to put on shoes.
The walk was cold and quiet. Thankfully he lived decently close to Mark so there wasn't much cold to deal with.
He got home and slid his shoes off by the door and went back into his room. He laid back onto his bed and cried. He was now feeling every ounce of pain and guilt of all his choices.
He pulled out his phone and tried to do anything to distract himself. He finally settled on listening to music and hoping to fall asleep.
Mark was hiding under his blankets. He still couldn't even his breathing. At this point, he was on the edge of a panic attack.
He shakily held his phone up and told Felix if he could come over he would appreciate it. He didn't add anything else and put his phone back down.
Felix was at Mark's in no time. He immediately walked into Mark's room after greeting Mark's mom.
He sat on the edge of Mark's bed and waited patiently so he didn't make him feel like he was forced to talk.
Mark grabbed Felix's arm and pulled gently so Felix slid next to him in bed.
Mark's head fell onto his best friend's chest and his sobs fell out.
Felix stroked his hair patiently and listened as the sobs slowly calmed down.
"Sean showed up."
"What?" Felix almost gasped.
"Someone had knocked at my door and I answered it and Sean was there. He didn't say anything really except when I went to shut my door he said sorry. Then I fully shut it and had a panic attack so I had to get you here."
"I'm glad you did, I hate for you to have to suffer alone. Do you want me to stay tonight?"
"Would you please?"
Felix nods and lets Mark rest his head back onto his chest. He soothes Mark by rubbing his back until his breathing evens out and he's asleep. Felix follows after.
The next morning the two get dressed for school. It's a lot colder out so Felix borrows one of Mark's hoodies along with his own and Mark puts on his flannel again with a thicker hoodie.
They head out and meet up with their friends.
"Ken, you look so c'yuuute your little nose is so red from the cold!" Mark teases.
Ken pouts and finds a tiny stick to throw at Mark.
Mark sticks his tongue out at his friend and they soon after arrive at the coffee shop.
Then, they are off to school. They walk a bit quicker than usual considering they were pretty much-losing feeling in their fingers.
They got into the building and put their extra layers in their lockers.
"I know I'll regret this after I graduate, but fuck I can't wait to graduate."
Marzia snorts but nods in agreement.
"Alrighty, I'll see all of you at lunch," Mark says smirking at the grunts he gets in response.
They separate and head off to their classes.
Felix gets in his seat and sees Sean. He ignores his presence as much as he doesn't want to and gets his work done.
The class isn't anything special, Felix really wishes he had something but there's nothing he could do about it now.
At lunch, the group falls back into normal habits. Ken was catching food Mark was throwing in his mouth. Felix and Marzia were flirting and giggling which Mark would occasionally make fun of by gagging or mocking Felix.
It was all normal until Sean stood by their table.
The group stared up at him as he stood their awkwardly.
"Um, sorry. I don't h-have anywhere to sit. If it's not too much trouble can I sit here? I'll leave after I finish my food."
Felix goes to say something but Mark speaks first, "That's fine."
Sean nods and sits down. The group resumes their normal antics and when Mark hears Sean giggle at something he looks over with a small smile on his face. Sean catches his eye and they hold eye contact for a minute before Mark goes back to focusing on throwing an M&M in Ken's mouth. The last period of the day they allow Sean to sit with them, again. He doesn't really talk but he listens intently so he feels at least a little included.
Sarah walks over to their table and everyone glares at her.
"Sean, what are you doing sitting with them?"
Sean scoffs, "Same reason you're sitting with fuckface over there. You learned there's something much better."
Sarah squints her eyes at him, "You don't want a repeat of what happened to you, do you?"
Ken speaks up this time his voice booming, "What? You wanna get someone else to beat him again? Is that it?"
Sarah looks shocked but switches her face back to disgust, "You'll regret this, Sean."
Sean looks down and plays with his hoodie strings.
"Fuck off, bitch." Mark spits, Sarah turns around and leaves.
The group bursts out into laughter at Mark's input, but Sean stays silent. He knew this was going to turn into something terrible for him.
The group fails to notice this, though, and they go onto talking about random things until the bell rings. Sean tells them goodbye and rushes off home as quickly as he can go.
He locks the front door and throws his shoes behind the door and shoves his backpack and hoodie on the couch.
When he gets to his room he feels his phone vibrate.
He checks it and sees Sarah has texted him.She told him to look outside.
"Oh no," Sean whispers to himself. He runs over to his mom's room and uses her window to look out and see Sarah and her new guy are waiting on the sidewalk. Sean's heartbeat starts pounding in his ears.
He runs back to his room and locks that door as well.
He gets another text, 'come outside or we'll go find mark'
Sean lets out a shaky breath, "Fuck."
He walks downstairs and unlocks the door, his hands shaking the whole time. He didn't even bother putting on a jacket.
He steps outside and sees the menacing smile on Sarah's face.
Mark and his friends were leaving the mall and going to Mark's house. Mark was excited because that meant they had to pass Sean's house. He couldn't shake this feeling of dread off, though. He didn't really understand where it was coming from, but he still pushed it down and enjoyed time with his friends as they were walking back.
The closer they got the more Mark was feeling it.
He brushed it off until they were right by Sean's house and heard a scream.
"What the fuck was that?" Ken said quietly.
Mark didn't answer, instead, he ran to the side of Sean's house and almost puked at the site in front of him.
Sarah was staring while the fuckface was beating Sean. The rest of the group ran up behind Mark.
"What are you-"
Just like that, Ken was ripping the guy off of Sean and threw him down. Sarah went to swing at Ken to stop him but Marzia pushed her back and she landed on the ground knocking the wind out of her. Mark ran to Sean and laid him on his side.
"Sean, can you hear me?"
Sean only groaned in response.
Felix and Ken were towering over the guy screaming profanities occasionally landing hits.
The two ran off and Marzia immediately called an ambulance.
Sean wasn't responding to anything.
"God, why couldn't we have gotten here just a little sooner?" Mark says, his voice breaking.
Sean moves his hand to lay it onto Mark's giving a weak squeeze.Soon after, the ambulance arrives and they all beg for them to let them ride with. The paramedics give in easy, and then they are off.
The group stares on at Sean and all feel pain deep in their hearts. They arrive and Sean is wheeled off to a room and the rest wait in the waiting room.
They all stay in silence, and when they see Sean's mom walk out. She sits down with them.
"What happened to my baby?"
"His ex-girlfriend treats him like shit and gets her new guy to beat him up because he thinks he might be gay," Mark says quietly.
The woman exhales deeply, "Thank you for telling me. I'm going to be pressing charges, I'm gonna go call the school as well. I'll update you when I'm done."
She leaves and they are all left in silence, again.
