These expectations weigh me down,
Such a pretty smile, don't you frown.
Stand up straight and stay polite,
don't be snappy, you'll start a fight.Put on lipstick, no not that shade of red,
tidy up, go make your bed.
Show some skin but not too much,
I don't care if you're limping,
hand me that crutch.Chin up darling and don't make a fuss,
mind the line and don't you dare cuss!
Your eyes are too dull, that dress is too short,
only a gentle laugh, lest you snort. That movie is too dark, don't ruin your mind,
oh but don't forget the dishes, always close the blinds.
Stay in school, learn all that,
but your breasts are always too big or too flat. Now be careful sweetie and eat real well,
wear some perfume, you don't want to smell.
Body hair is disgusting, shave it off,
keep it classy and don't you scoff.Expectations set a bar so high,
teenagers, people are forced to lie.
This isn't me, not who I am.
Why doesn't the world care or give a damn?Lost and lonely, far apart.
If only they'd give me the key to my broken heart.Written on the 20/11/18
