The three walked across the town square and to Havillah's dismay more of the Gone, the Sleepers continued to turn up. It was an epidemic, or so it seemed and it really made Havillah wonder what was actually happening there to make them all end up in the state they were currently in."What do you think?" She directed her thoughts to her Guide but like always, he chose to remain silent just like those other times when she had actually needed him. "How Typical!" She thought, now irritated even as she walked behind the sibling pair like a little lost lamb.
They left the town square and walked towards a gate. A quaint little thing of thin creeking metal that was overgrown with wild ivy and vines that scaled up the metallic archway to create a dome of tiny pink and white blossoms. The white paint was peeled off at places and rusted metal was peeking out where the paint had completely fallen off.
On a normal day, this would have been a sight to behold. However, all it gave off were some eerily vibes especially with the backdrop of the crazy fog and the knowledge of the tragedy that was happening there. The little double doorways creaked as Jharey pushed them wide open. Beyond them was even more fog that prevented her from seeing what lay ahead of her.
Still, she followed them.
They went up a steep path up the side of a small hill. This too was made up of cemented cobbled stones with the ocassional stairs on the narrow pathway. It was narrow, yes but not for lack of space. For despite the looming jungle that was below them and around the town, the hill was bare and totally devoid of any shrubbery that would have otherwise crowded the little pathway. There was also short grass that covered the entire hillside like a green carpet. It rolled down to the edge of the town and the cemented town square which made Havillah wonder why, in a walled town like the one they had left behind, the mayor's apartments had to be separate from the rest of the households such that they were literally outside the town's walls.
She did not utter her questions however seeing as Jharey was already mad at her for having been compelled to bring her along. Either way, Havillah was not complaining if it meant having a roof over her head and eventually finding answers to the questions that were plaguing her mind.
Was this another terror or just an ordinary sickness? Ordinary?she scoffed at herself. What could she possibly know of human illnesses? That was not something that had been covered in her mentorship curriculum. In fact, she could imagine Elder Lionel going into detail about anything remotely related to humans. However, he did despise them. That much he did spoke of them which was understandable considering his house.
Havillah's mind went back to the illness. Was it something that Killion was aware of? Maybe there was something the Hub could do. She thought as calculated the distance between the two towns. They couldn't have been that far from Bethesda, but then, she had travelled for three days. This being the third day and had gotten lost while she wandered around the tropical forest. Putting her flight time into consideration, Havillah knew that she could have been anywhere west of Bethesda. If only she had been paying attention. Now many doubts were plaguing her, crippling her thoughts and her powers of deduction especially where the geography was concerned.
The path before them suddenly forked as the trio continued ascending the hill albeit at an angle that was perpendicular to the main path. Havillah wanted to ask why they had left the main pathway but even then, as she thought about it, she found her questions silly considering that Jharey had already said that he was taking Sophir home. That begged the question where did the main path lead, but even that Havillah could not ask. Not Jharey with his hard looks that reminded her of Calla, or Sophir who would have probably gotten into more trouble for entertaining Havillah's brand of curiousity.
