Baby's are weird looking. Did I look like this as an infant? God, I hope not.
"Amy's he's so beautiful!" Cooed Grandma Farrah.
Yeah, okay.
"Nov, do you want to hold him?"
Is that allowed?
I climbed on to the hospital bed next to mommy and she placed him in my arms. He looked up at me and frowned.
I feel the same way.
Then he smiled and it made me smile.
"So don't keep us in suspense you guys, what are you naming him?"
Mommy and daddy looked up at each other and smiled. "This is Nathaniel Lee Booker."
Another N name. Of course.
Nathaniel started to cry and I handed him back.
"I'm going to go get a snack."
"Can I come?"
Auntie Karma smiled and held out her hand for me.
"Auntie Karma?"
"Yes Super Nova?"
"How did mommy and daddy meet?"
She froze a little while inserting a dollar for a bag of chips.
This should be good.
"Wow. That's—that's a question, isn't it,? Umm..."
"They met in high school right?"
She smiled, "Yes! Yes they did."
"How?"
She frowned thinking I'd be satisfied with that question.
She should know better.
"Well, we kind of all meet each other together. Your mommy, daddy, Uncle Shane and I. I liked daddy first and we dated on and off..."
"I was conceived in high school right?"
"WHAT?!?" She yells then looks around to see if anyone heard her. "You know what conceived means?"
I nod.
Her face gets weary and I already know what she's thinking. If she knows what conceiving a human being is, then she obviously knows what sex is or the fundamentals of it anyways. There's no way a six-year-old knows that!
And yet...
"Yes, you were actually born in a car. I delivered you myself." She said proud of herself.
"Yes, yes, I know now, back to how daddy and mommy met and came to the point of conceiving me."
She frowned again, "Okay. You—you were conceived during a confusing time for your mom."
"Why was it confusing?"
I can read her so well. She's trying to see how much I know about my mom's romantic life. And because of her journals, that she'll kill me if she found out I read, I know a lot. But what's a girl to read when she runs out of books?
"Because your mom liked two people at the same time."
"Okay. Daddy and..." Come on spill it Auntie Karma! No one will tell me and mom's never admitted it in her journals.
She looked conflicted but ultimately said, "Me. Your mom was in love with me."
I gasped pretending to me shocked, "What?"
"Just please, don't tell your parents I told you. They'd kill me."
"Don't be silly. They'll wait till you give birth first."
"You little." She playfully squeezed my cheeks and I squealed.
"Were you two always faking it?" I asked.
She smiled and shook her head. "No. At several points in my life I actually thought about being with your mom. And then I realize I could never make her as happy as your dad does. She is and will always be my best friend. No matter what."
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"Not sugar coating it because I'm a child."
"I hope my daughter's just like you. Smart, quirky, and wise beyond her years."
"Don't forget beautiful."
We laugh together as we walk hand-in-hand back to the room.
