Take a deep breath Halston. Just breathe....
Of all the awkward situations I have been in, this has to be at the top! Chris is the first to pipe up, of course. "I'll start. I'm Chris." He nods his head at Nate then winks at Paisley before he continues. "I work fire too just at a different station. I have known these guys for a long time. We all went to school together here in Santa Mira and the four of us kinda became best friends over time." Chris has a huge smirk on his face as he takes another shot. "Although, Halston and Kale took their friendship to another level." He sure loves to stir the shit!
I kick Chris in his shin with my stiletto beneath the table. He looks at me with a 'what did I do' look on his face. Kale directs his face from Chris straight to mine. The look he gives me is full of fierce desire. He licks his lips and I can't help but stare. Maybe Kale hasn't changed as much as I had thought. Either that or the alcohol is making him partial to me. It feels so wrong with Nate sitting across from me but Kale has always had this effect on me. I think part of me even wishes that Nate never stepped into the picture with Kale being back. I have to give Nate a chance. It is new and exciting and I need to try and move on because who knows if Kale is really here to stay. Kale was always there for me and never made me feel unwanted. It was just total and utter heartbreak when he left. We vowed to wait for one another until he got back. After time, my hope faded away. I know the resentment I hold is a factor in why I'm even considering Nate as an option now knowing Kale is back.
Nate looks at me and doesn't look too stoked. "So you all go way back then? Nice." He then shoots his head to Kale and asks, "So what exactly do you do, bro?"
Kale is not the least bit phased by Nate. "Just been kicking ass and taking names. I spent five years with Special forces, followed by two years on private contract, and now I am commander in SWAT for Santa Mira Sheriff's Department." Kale gazes at me again. I get the feeling he doesn't want Nate here at all for obvious reasons!
Beck looks at Kale and boasts, "my brother is a fucking bad ass!" I can't help but giggle at Beck's remark. With Kale, everything was easy. We were madly and deeply in love and life was great. We never had drama or negativity. He was my first love and everything that came along with it including intimacy. He is actually the only person I have slept with. Sad, right? I know a lot of people say young love isn't real love: it's lust, it's a new feeling, it doesn't last. For us it was different. Beck was always so accepting of it all. She never got upset like I was ditching her for her brother since we were all so close. Their parents pretty much took me in as one of their own after my parents passed.
Chris's smile grows a mile wide as the shots keep coming and the conversation heats up. "So Paisley, how do you know Nate?"
Paisley flips her long brown hair to the side and smiles at Chris. "I love to watch Nate fight. It is so intense and he is absolutely amazing to watch. We are merely friends though. Nate has another big fight coming up next Friday since he obliterated the guy last night!" She gives Nate a nudge on the side and giggles. "You all should come! I'm sure Nate would love that." Paisley places her hand on Nate's back and gives him a kiss on the cheek. Is this bitch his number one fan or what? Give me a break. I don't know what it is, but there is something vindictive about her.
I keep glancing up at Kale to see what his reactions are to everything. We keep making eye contact and I feel the blush on my face. I have missed him so much, more than I wanted to admit before. I was hoping my feelings would stay suppressed but I feel them strongly coming back to light. I thought- hey, maybe I will see him and will feel absolutely nothing! Sure as shit, I was wrong!!
Beck goes and gets beers for the table and another round of shots. "Thanks Beck! I didn't plan on drinking too much," I say. "Plus Chris and I had a couple of drinks before coming."
