"Dinner" a feminine voice calls from upstairs. All the kids run up and Austin and I lag behind.
"Johnnie seems to like you" Austin laughs.
"He's cool."
"Yeah. Friend of the family. Not blood related."
I nod and we enter the dining hall. I long white table seated everyone. Everyone was casually grabbing food and creating chatter. I sit down next to Austin and his father. God this is awkward. Someone taps their glass with a spoon. A man and a woman stand up smiling.
"We're pregnant!" The woman smiles as everyone claps. Dinner his back to usual. Austin grabs my hand under the table. His dad stares angrily at his step-mom who can't decide who she is happier for, the pregnant lady or Austin and me. The creepy smile plastered on her face tells me she does t see her husbands, not very well concealed, anger. Drama sucks. I look around studying people. Almost everyone just kinda chats and looks normal. Everyone seems to know each other well and overall like each other.
Once dinner is done everyone flows out and says their goodbyes. Finally the anxiety drains away when Austin says it's time to sleep. It wasn't until my head hit the pillow that I realized how exhausted I really was.

The next morning Austin reminded me that we had to go back to school tomorrow. This place really takes education seriously and honestly I need a longer break.
"Do I get a Christmas kiss?" Austin pouts
I smile and crawl up onto his bed planting a kiss on his cheek. He kisses my lips and takes my legs so I'm straddling him. His tongue enters my mouth and his hands tangle in my hair.
"Hey Aust...." Megan walks in "ewwww"
We detangle from each other and I see her shielding her eyes "Dad had to work but step momster wants us to open presents anyways"
Step MOMster. That's a good one. Austin sighs and we get up and follow Megan downstairs. We plop down on the squishy leather couch holding hands. I still couldn't help but be in awe of the Christmas tree. It was so beautiful. Megan hands out brightly wrapped boxes to everyone and I sit and watch.
"Oh! One last thing!" Step mom says after everyone unwraps and I sit there awkwardly. She disappears and comes back with a brown cardboard box with holes in it.
"Alan, with a little help from Austin..." She says handing me the box "we got you the perfect present"
I feel tears of joy well up in my eyes "I've never gotten a real Christmas present before"
*Flashback*
"Mom promised..." My nine year old self whispered
"Just go to bed" Kyle ordered "mom will come home. I knew this was a lie. Every Christmas she goes somewhere that we don't even know. After that thing I have to call a father did what he did...well the only thing mom really does anymore is smile and cook pies. Kyle kind of became my only family I suppose. It'd be wrong to say mom wasn't a round because she was, just not in ways I needed her specifically.
The next morning I wake up to no mom but presents under the tree.
"Look! Mom did come" Kyle smiles
"Yeah" I say excitedly ripping open the presents.
"Kyle" I frown looking at the Barbie doll "which neighbor did you steal this from?"
"Girl next door" he mumbles
I hug him "thanks for trying at least"
