The day when Lyla left Seattle, Sean called her immediately when he realized she was gone.
"Sean?" She asked, her voice cracked since she's been crying for the past few hours.
"Lyla, where are you now? I've been calling you but you didn't answer." Sean asked, his voice was full of anxiety.
She started to pace around the room. "I'm in my dorm, I didn't answer because I was on the plane then, sorry about that." She scratched her neck.
He paused for a few seconds before speaking. "I'm really sorry that I missed saying goodbye to you. Jenn asked me to see Zoolander 2 and I was really excited about the movie so I completely forgot about it, I'm so sorry—" Sean said the whole sentence in one breath.
"That's fine, so my roommate is fine—for now." She tried to change the subject as she let out a small giggle.
"What's her name?"
"Hanna, she's a little noisy sometimes. But most of the time she's fine." Lyla replied. "I mean— she has ten shoes, ten fucking shoes, can you believe it?"
Sean chuckled. "Oh man, that's crazy."
All of a sudden, the air filled with silence as no one spoke a word. Lyla walked toward her bed and lay down on it, staring at the ceiling.
"So...uh. I figure you and Jenn are getting along pretty well huh?" Lyla spoke then took a deep breath, waiting for Sean's answer. Of course she's already known the answer. However, deep inside her heart. She still hoped that she could hear the different answer.
"Yeah, I mean... we eat lunch together every day. And we go for a movie every weekend," Sean replied joyfully. "She's really nice and...cute." He added as Lyla stroked the watch nervously which Sean gave her for her birthday, she wore it 24/7 unless she went for a shower.
"Oh," she paused, trying to hold back her tears and pretended to feel very happy for him. "that's great."
"So what about New York, did you like it so far?" He asked.
Lyla sat up on the edge of the bed. "It's kinda cold, but I like it so far, everything is so new to me and... I really like NYU." She tried to sound dynamic about it.
"Cool, I gotta go by the way, my dad's calling me—talk to you soon, miss you!" He said.
"Okay, bye Sean." When she hung up the phone, she couldn't help crying again as she felt the sadness surged through her body.
She just missed hanging out with Sean, and before long she just realized that she had a hella deep feelings for him.

Two months later, Lyla got more used to the new environment as she got a few good friends beside her, including Hanna- her roommate, and a guy named Alex. They always hang out after class, sometimes they skip some useless classes together. Btw Lyla's major is English since she's so into literature and stuff. While Sean's major is art.
On the other side of the America, Sean was hanging out with Jenn and they were both standing in front of the theater, thinking about what to watch.
"What do you want to watch? There are so many choices." Sean asked while folded his arms.
Jenn looked at the screen and said.
"The Notebook? I always love that kind of movies." She grinned.
Sean frowned. "Ewww, I hate romantic movies, can we watch others instead?" He stepped closer and stroked her hair softly.
She in return stroked his arms and smiled. "Fine, What do you want to watch then?"
Sean squinted his eyes then exclaimed. "Oh my god! They have Star Wars? Let's watch it! Come on—" Sean grabbed her by the arm but she shook away.
"No way, I hate that movie, can you pick another movie?" Jenn frowned.
"But Lyla and I always watch together, she would definitely say yes if she were here." Sean blurted out, pouting.
"Yeah, But I'm not Lyla, so let's watch something else okay?" Jenn started to sound annoyed as she rolled her eyes.
Sean sighed. "Fine, then The Notebook it is." He said reluctantly as Jenn smiled and hugged him. "You're the best, babe." She said as Sean stroked her back and smiled. However, at the moment, Sean felt quite lonely without Lyla since they always watched their favorite movies together, they have so much in common. But when he's with Jenn, he felt different. They were always argued at little things since their interests were completely different. Sean started to miss those times hanging out with Lyla, they talked about almost everything. In addition, he started to realize that he often mentioned Lyla whenever he's with Jenn, making him a little confused.
After the movie, they went to Starbucks to grab a coffee as they sat and waited for the coffees.
Jenn glanced at Sean, who was looking at the cellphone screen at the moment, then smacked him on the arm. "You fell asleep during the movie, what the heck?"
At that, he lifted up his head and looked at her. "Sorry, I've already mentioned that I hate romantic movies."
Jenn stared at him furiously. "Fine, then let's go shopping once we finish the coffees." She smiled.
"No way, I'm beat and my legs are killing me. Why don't we play PS4 at my place? I got some great games to play." He smirked.
Jenn frowned. "Absolutely no, I hate video games, it's so boring."
Sean started to feel impatient and annoyed as he clenched his fist. "Lyla would say yes, she loves video games—"
"Then go find Lyla, you like her so much don't you? So much that you're not even want to be with me anymore!" She yelled, suddenly raised her voice and glowered at him.
"I'm not— I just—" His words came out garbled and thick.
"Just what?" She sputtered.
"I think..."
"What?"
"I think that we should..." He stared up at her firmly. "We should break up."
The air filled with silence as Jenn stared back at him blankly while Sean looked at her seriously and emotionlessly.
She stood up and sighed. "You know what? That's a good idea, don't call me, I won't answer you anyway." She turned and stormed out of the shop as everyone stared at Sean, who sighed and left the shop ASAP.When he got home, he threw his backpack on the floor and lay down on the bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about the aggressive breakup they had. Actually, their relationship had grown gradually apart for a few weeks when Jenn started to become manipulative and stubborn, making Sean wonder why would he be with her the first place. Then he realized— it was her looks, she's probably the most beautiful girl Sean had ever seen. And dating Jenn had made Sean become quite popular at school as well. However, he realized that he probably never really loved Jenn the first place. He was relieved that he finally had the courage to break up with her. But Sean started to miss Lyla even more.
After dinner, Sean tried to call Lyla as he dialed the numbers. Meanwhile, Lyla was at a party in campus with her friends. When her phone vibrated, she picked up and answered. "Hello?"
"Hey, Lyla... it's me, Sean."
"Sean! Hey, how are you?" The music was so loud that Lyla had to raise her voice and shout.
"The music's so loud, are you at a party?"
"WHAT?"
"Are you at a party?" Sean raised his voice.
"Yeah—" her friend drank the whole bottle of beer beside her, making her burst out laughing. "sorry—" She went on laughing hard as Sean, on the other hand, feeling a little bit lonely out there.
"So—sorry, it's my friend, he drank the whole bottle of beer in one go, UN—FUCKING BELIEVABLE!" She still giggled at her friend while talking to Sean on the phone.
"That's okay— I just want to say that I just—"
Lyla cut him off as she continued giggling so hard and grabbed a bottle of beer from her friend Alex.
"Are you drunk?" Sean asked.
"No, I'm not—" she shoved Alex away and both laughed.
"Let's dance together, come on—" Alex said as he grabbed Lyla's hand to walk with him.
"Okay—" she giggled.
"Sean, I gotta hang up, we're going to DANCE!" She exclaimed dynamically.
"Oh okay then, by—" Sean didn't get to finish his sentence as Lyla hung up already.Sean sighed and threw his phone on his bed, sitting down on it and supported his head with his hands. Recalling the past when he was still in high school, after he started dating Jenn, he seldom hung out with Lyla and he regretted it. He hated himself for it and for now he just really missed his friend. He felt like a total sucker and jealous of Lyla's life, who just had a blast at the party while Sean just broke up with Jenn and sat alone in his room. She is so happy, Sean thought. But he still wished that she could come back soon. He glanced at the phone beside him and grabbed it, unlocked the screen and started swiping through his camera rolls to see some old pictures of him and Lyla. One photo was when they were skating at the park, they both wore hoodies and grabbed the skateboards in their hands, smiling brightly. Another photo was Lyla taken by Sean, her grin was so lively... She was wearing his squad hoodie at the time, staring directly at the camera and gestured V. Although the squad hoodie was kinda big for her but Sean still thought she fitted perfectly in it. Looking at those pictures just made him miss her even more.
When Sean decided to call her again, it went straight to the voicemail, she didn't answer. To be continued...
