In the winter darkness, a thousand soft lights

of white birds against an empty sky

and the rustling of wings against metal

reaching for freedom from silver cages.

Feathers fall like snow, drifting and lost

wilting on the forest floor.

The lights flicker like candles in the wind

desperate movements melting into blurs

aching for freedom to fly away,

leave behind the darkness and run from fear,

survive with clipped wings,

escape from locked cages.

Thousands of broken wings,

thousands of fading lights.

In the winter darkness, a thousand lost souls.

Author's Note:

Introduction: I create this collection with the hopes of sharing comfort in the knowledge that we are not alone. The most beautiful thing about poetry is that it can mean different things to different people. I may not feel the same hurt you do, but with poetry we can share different pain in the same words. Maybe, just maybe, we can begin to heal knowing we are lonely together.

Format: The poems in this book are organized by different bird species. Each type of bird has a different theme and writing style, reflecting different experiences and emotions.

To all the lost: Never give up fighting. We are not alone, not hopeless, not broken. Even if the light fades.

Thank you so much for reading!
