I spent the rest of the afternoon reading, but of course I finished the book before the day was over and got really bored. I rolled my eyes as I put it on my nightstand and got off my bed. I glanced at the book. It was the same one I'd given Kaneki.
'Stop thinking about him, you wuss", I thought to myself.
I fixed my hair a bit and straightened out my clothes before I left my room, on my way to the bookstore. I had nothing better to do anyway.
When I finally reached the bookstore I went to look for more books from the author Kaneki liked. I found a few. I wanted to decide between two of them, but I couldn't. Eventually I walked out of the bookstore with four books in my bag. Yes, I bought copies for Kaneki too.
I was on my way back and walked into an alleyway when I saw two doves on the street.
"Investigator Suzuya", one of them started.
I turned around as they walked into the alleyway.
He must've just seen my stitches, because the way I was dressed I didn't look like Rei at all. I mean I did, but my hair was longer and I was obviously wearing girls clothes.
"We were just-", the dove continued. "Wait a second... You're not Suzuya."
"You don't say", I said in a mockingly sweet tone. "Can I help you two?"
I noticed the dove's partner, a girl in her twenties, beginning to back away. Her hand moved up to her ear.
"This is 1st class investigator Kurata Michie, partner of special class investigator Tashiro Kuemon", she said in a muffled voice. "We have encountered a woman who looks a lot like investigator Suzuya. We suspect it's The Vermilion Demon. Requesting back up."
I rolled my eyes when the first dove, apparently named Tashiro, kept talking like I couldn't see his partner calling me in.
"Do you think I'm stupid, Kuemon-san?", I sighed. "I can hear your brat calling me in at this very moment."
Tashiro narrowed his eyes at me, laying his thumb against the button of his metal briefcase. I showed him a demonic smile.
"Michie-san", Tashiro said without taking his eyes off me. "Be careful. This is an extremely dangerous ghoul. SS~ rate is not something to underestimate."
"Ohh, you're right about that", I said as I took a step back.
I grinned, walking further into the alleyway backwards. The doves followed me. I watched them carefully and studied their movements before they both revealed their quinques. The girl had a long sword, a bikaku. The man had a lance-like one, I'm guessing a rinkaku. I didn't move, but I was prepared for anything. A special class investigator and his 1st class partner were not something to underestimate, and I wasn't planning on dying.
Suddenly the man ran forward, his quinque ready. I jumped sideways to dodge, seeing the girl coming at me from the corner of my eye. I spun around and kicked her quinque away, landing a few feet away from both doves.
The girl picked up her sword from the ground and took an offensive stance, glancing at her partner. He nodded once and the girl flew forward, raising her quinque at me. I jumped sideways with a spin and then jumped backwards to dodge another blow. I was just looking around when the lance-like quinque of the man impaled me from behind.
"That'll teach you", the dove victoriously said.
Without me realizing it my kakugan activated and I stepped sideways, pulling the lance from the man's hands. Then I spun around, letting the grip hit his face. He took a step back as he rubbed his nose. I grimaced as I pulled his quinque through me entirely to take it out. Suddenly the girl launched at me from the side and in a reflex I threw the lance at her like a spear. Unfortunately my aim was way off and it just scratched her arm.
