Forty-one

Everybody returned to Anteiku safely, where we all caught up.

"Auction?", I mumbled as they told me what I'd missed. "Tsukiyama extermination mission? Yoshimura... Died?"

"Quite a lot happened", Ayato said as he put his arm around Hinami's shoulder.

"I can see that", I smiled as I looked at the pair. "When did you two become a thing?"

Ayato blushed and averted his eyes.

"About a year after you were imprisoned", Hinami explained. "We were together a lot when we were trying to come up with a plan to rescue you, and then it just clicked."

"Well, you definitely look cute together", I smiled.

Then I realized something.

"What is it, love?", Kaneki asked as he put his hand on my shoulder.

"Four years", I mumbled. "I'm 23."

"You're 23", Kaneki repeated before giving me a kiss on top of my head.

"Hinami you're... 18?", I asked.

She nodded.

"Ayato is 19", I whispered more to myself than to them. "Touka is 22, and you're also 23."

I looked up at Kaneki as I said the last part. He nodded. Then he put his hand on the side of my face and wiped away a tear I didn't know had fallen.

"I've been away for so long", I whispered as I covered his hand with mine. "I missed so much. I wish I could've controlled myself that day."

I was silent for a moment. Then I looked up at Kaneki. He stared into my eyes before handing me a small paper.

I carefully took it and turned it around. It was the picture I took from his room, the one where I kissed his cheek while he had the biggest smile on his face. A tear rolled down my cheek. I thought I'd lost it.

"Where did you get this?", I asked in a suffocated voice.

"I found it the first day you lost control", Kaneki murmured as he wrapped his arms around me from behind.

He leaned his chin on my shoulder.

"I didn't remember a thing, but I recognized myself", he continued. "I kept it safe all along. I was very glad I did so when my memories returned."

Then I remembered something. The reason I snapped in the first place.

"Please tell me Oshiro is dead", I said.

"Oh, she is", kaneki chuckled. "You made sure of that before you were imprisoned."

"How did they catch me?", I muttered. "When you and Rei visited me in my cell you said I'd killed tons of people and investigators while I was loose. How did you capture me?"

Kaneki seemed uneasy at the question and took a step backwards.

"What?", I asked.

"You see... Juuzou is the one who calmed you down", he mumbled.

My eyes widened at that. Rei calmed me down?

"How?", I asked.

"I don't know", Kaneki answered. "He approached you and talked to you. Then part of your kakuja evaporated like a kagune. You turned around and said something about being tired and wanting to go home. Juuzou caught you when you fell and said he'd take you home and then you just... You fell asleep in his arms. CCG sedated you after that and quietly took you to your cell."
