Thirty-seven

Ayato, Hinami and I went looking for Kaneki, or Haise. We didn't really have any clues as to where he could be other than the fact that I met him at the bookstore the other day.

We strolled through the city, scanning our surroundings and trying to locate Kaneki.

"I feel like a fricking bloodhound", I murmured as I tried to pick up his scent.

"Yeah, me too", Ayato answered with a sigh.

"Where could he be?", Hinami wondered out loud.

"Maybe we should split up", I suggested. "We should search the branch offices."

"That's a good idea", Ayato replied.

"Hinami, I don't think you should go on your own", I then said. "You can go with me or with Ayato so we can keep you safe."

"You work better on your own, Eiko-chan", she answered. "I think it'd be best if I went with Ayato."

"Alright", I answered. "Ayato, you have your earpiece, right? Contact me if anything goes wrong."

He nodded.

"I'll see you later", I then said as I turned around.

They both nodded. I saw them heading for the nearest branch office, so I went the other way.

After I'd searched the entire city I sighed and moved my hand up to my earpiece.

"Ayato?", I asked. "Have you found anything?"

"No, nothing", he answered.

"I'll ask Uta if he knows anything", I said. "You guys should ask around as well."

"Copy that", Ayato mumbled.

I quickly made my way to the 4th ward, where I walked into HySy.

"Uta-kun?", I asked as I walked around and scanned my surroundings, admiring the new masks on display.

Uta appeared in the back of the shop, walking down the stairs.

"Eiko-chan", he said as he walked up to me. "I didn't expect to see you back here so soon."

"I know", I said as I gave him a quick hug. "I just came to see if you knew anything about Haise Sasaki. We can't find him in any of the branch offices."

"Well, I don't know", Uta shrugged. "Maybe Itori does."

I frowned. I knew she had a lot of intel, but I couldn't stand her.

"I'll call her", Uta murmured as he walked to the back of the shop.

I sighed and walked past the display stands, taking a closer look at all the masks.

Just then the door opened. My eyes widened when I made eye contact with the last person I expected to see.

"Haise", I stammered. "What are you doing here?"

"We came to get masks", he said with a small smile as he gestured to a group of delinquents around him.

"I see", I answered. "Uta is on the phone right now, but he'll be here shortly."

"Sasaki", one of the dark haired boys said. "You know this lady?"

"I do, I met her on the square once", Haise answered.

"Where are my manners? My name is Eiko", I said as I nodded at them.

"Nice to meet you, Eiko", a green haired kid said.

"Likewise", I said with a small smile.

Then I felt Uta's presence behind me. Haise and the others tensed when they saw him.
