Estella's heart hadn't stopped pounding from the moment she stepped foot in Diagon Alley. People were everywhere. She had been to a few parties with a handful of close family friends but nothing could have prepared her for this. Vendors waved artifacts from every corner, shouting to the unfortunate passerby. Strange smells filled the air and Estella felt like cowering as a group of odd witches gave her rather unpleasant glares. While she was distracted, her foot caught on a loose cobblestone and the girl panicked as she felt herself began to fall. Suddenly, a hand shot out and grabbed her before she was flattened.
"Really Penny," her mother hissed. "Get a hold of yourself."
Estella straightened immediately and gave a brisk nod, brushing off her cloak in embarrassment. She scolded herself. She needed to focus.
"I've got to run to the Ministry," Mr. Blackwood interrupted suddenly, checking his pocket watch. "They found a violent dragon in the Forest of Dean and it could get nasty." With a click of his watch, Estella's father was gone.
Amelie sighed, but motioned her daughter forward as she had become rather used to her husband's absence. "I've already gone to Gringotts so we can spend as little time as possible here, now we just need to get your things." She hurried down the street and into Flourish and Blotts.
"Penny Blackwood," Estella reminded herself firmly. She shook her head and sighed before following her mother.
The bookstore was packed. Young witches and wizards huddled at every table and arguments could be heard across the building.
"Mum I wanted this book about Quidditch," a dark skinned boy begged his exasperated mother. "Who cares about school rubbish?"
"The Standard Book of Spells Grade 5 is GONE!" a rather bossy looking girl wailed.
Estella shrunk her shoulders, trying to look as small as possible. Her mother sighed and made a straight line to the front desk.
"I already placed an order for all your books, I just need to speak with the manager. Don't wander off."
Estella gave a numb nod and stood by some books about the dark arts. They looked rather interesting but she didn't want to draw attention by examining them for herself. Besides her parents would murder her. The dark arts were to be used only when necessary and not as a personal fascination.
"Hullo!"
Estella jumped and grabbed onto the table behind her as she faced the bushy haired girl that had popped up beside her.
"Oh I'm so sorry," the girl blurted, her hair flaring wildly. "I didn't mean to disturb you, you just looked alone and I thought I'd well.." she paused and her face softened. "I'm sorry it's just this is my first time here and.."
"Oh it's.. it's my first time too," Estella found her voice. Cursing herself for being so impolite, she held out her hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Likewise," the girl gripped her hand firmly. "Are you a muggleborn too then?" she asked excitedly.
"What?" Estella paused. "Oh no, I just don't go out much." Seeing the girl's face fall in disappointment, she quickly added "This must be so exciting for you then. Are you with your parents?"
"Yes!" the girl's eyes lit up. "They're off looking at my robes, but I couldn't help but go back to this bookstore. Isn't it wonderful?" she looked around in giddiness.
Estella wrinkled her nose as she thought about her cozy library back home. This was chaos. "I suppose so," she agreed reluctantly.
"Oh I'm Hermione. Hermione Jean Granger." The girl added quickly. "I'm so sorry, I've been forgetting my manners. This day has just been rather surreal. You're so lucky you've grown up with this." She looked around again as a wizard used his wand to send a few books soaring back on the shelves.
