The Little Mermaid

Once a child

Once in the sea

Once alone, beneath the waves, you struggled to swim

However you were not like me

So I took you back to the surface.

Once alone, in the wake of the summer sun, you coughed as you breathed

However I was not like you

So I dragged myself back into the sea

"Wait," you called out to me

Your voice was hoarse and you coughed.

"Wait," you said, "who are you?"

My green scales gleamed in the light of the sun

You stared

You watched

You let me go away and I wondered if I'd see you again

However such things are not allowed

Once a youth

Once in the sea

Once alone beneath the tides, I saw a ship sail through the waves

However I was not like you

So I could only watch at bay as flowers blossomed in the sky.

Once in the sea

Once alone upon the drifting waves, you now reminiscence from the railing

However, you were not like me

So you could only watch at bay as flowers blossomed on the waters.

"Wait," I called out to you

My voice was light and I paused.

"Wait," I said, "can I sing for you?"

Hidden, my red hair shimmered on the surface of the sea

You started

You searched;

You let me sing away and I wondered if I'd see you again

However such things are not advised

Once in the sea

Once alone, beneath the tides, I now see a familiar face drift through the sea

However I was not like you

So, I could only swim near the shoreline.

Once alone, upon the drifting waves, you now tell me of the sea

However, you were not like me

So you could only smile and wave as I swam back to shore.

"Wait," I called out to you

My voice was loud and I paused.

"Wait," I said, "can I come back?"

Looking at me, a sad light came to your eyes

You smiled,

You waved;

You let me leave and I wondered if I could be with you

However such things aren't possible, are they?

Once in the sea

Once on land

Once alone, beneath the waves, we now swim together

However we are not like before

So we continued for an eternity
