A/N: Listen to the song before/during/after the story you read the story. Thank. Enjoy!
Gavin walked slowly down the halls trying to postpone getting to his class as long as possible. He looked around and saw audition sign ups for the Drama Club's production of Dear Evan Hansen. Gavin loved theater and loved the musical. He wanted to audition so he put his name down and put "Connor Murphy" next to his name. He doubted he would get it but he figured it was worth a try.
He finished his day and went home. He took a breathe, smiled, and prepared for his audition. He was always told to "dress the part you want," so he put on black jeans and a grey zip up hoodie. He grabbed his keys and rushed out of the house to get to the school for auditions on time.
He parked his car and entered the building. The lobby was full of people with sheet music in hand and ready to audition. He walked over to the table where the music was and he was greeted by the smiling face of a senior who was left to work on his own. "Hi!" He sais cheerfully. Gavin smiled and said hello back. "What part are you going for and what is your audition piece? And of course what is your name and grade?" He asked. "My name is Gavin Reed. I'm in 12 grade. I'm auditioning for Connor Murphy and auditioning with Sincerely, Me," he replied. The boy smiled and handed Gavin his sheet music. He walked to a corner to practice, and continued to glance back at the brunette boy who handed him the sheet music. The boy eventually caught Gavin's gaze and they locked eyes as a deep blush spread across Gavin's face. They held each other's gaze for a brief moment that felt blissfully like forever to the boys, then broke it as the boy looked down to grab sheet music for himself.
Gavin heard a small bit of the boy singing alone in the hallway. He couldn't tell, but his voice sounded beautiful. He wanted to be friends with this boy. Maybe even more if he got to know him. Gavin heard his name be called and went in to audition. He sang to the best of his ability, making the judges laugh at appropriate times and leaving them slightly in awe. He gathered his music and headed out as the beautiful brunette boy headed in.
As the brunette walked out, he stepped over towards Gavin and stopped in front of him. "Good luck. I'm sure you'll get a callback. List will be posted tonight," the boy said with a smile. He clearly knew what he was doing and had obviously done this before. "Callback?" Gavin asked. He was confused since he'd never done this before. "Oh. It's basically where they review you audition and call you back for another one before they make their final decision," he elaborated. "I hope you get one," the brunette said to Gavin. "Thanks! Same to you. By the way. I never got your name. What is your name?" Gavin I asked. "Oh! I'm so sorry. My name is Conan," he said as he extended his arm and held out his hand for Gavin to shake. Gavin gladly took his hand and shook it with a wide smile of his face. "Well, gotta run but I'll see you later, Gavin!" He said. He turned and with that the boy was gone.
Once the boy was gone, Gavin gathered all his things, left, and drove home. Once he arrived home, he swung open the door to his house and let it ease closed behind him. His older half brother, Elijah, was sitting in the couch. Elijah was looking after Gavin since his parents left. His aunt offered to do it, but Elijah didn't want Gavin in her care. Gavin was a senior in high school and was technically old enough to take care of himself, but Elijah also didn't want that for him yet. Gavin didn't really like the thought of being alone anyway. His parents leaving was bad enough, he didn't want to live alone in their house and be reminded everyday by the emptiness that they left him because he was gay. He was thankful that Elijah, though only two years older, came to look after him rather than stay and dorm away at college, which he had said he would rather tale care of Gavin and stay at home then do.
He entered the living room and plopped down on the couch next to Elijah, who was on his phone looking intently at something. "Finally back?" He asked Gavin, not taking his eyes away from the screen. "Yeah," Gavin replied simply. "How did it go?" Elijah asked, looking up but not locking the phone. "Fine I guess. I don't know to be honest." Elijah turned to look at Gavin. "Hey, I'm sure you did great." He wrapped an arm around Gavin and pulled him closer into a supportive and comforting hug. Gavin sighed contently and closed his eyes and smiled. "Why don't you go get a shower and then we can watch movies and wait for the callback list. I'll also add you to the Facebook group." He told Gavin. Elijah had been an active thespian in the school's drama program and was still in the Facebook group as an alumni. Gavin smiled and got up to get a shower.
