I reread some of my old writing and good lord why did nobody tell me it was so out of character for both of them yikes. Anyway here is a story that's more in character and hopefully better.
I know I asked for suggestions, I'm sorry I didn't take them with this story, my mental health has been spiraling, so I wrote fluff as a coping mechanism.
I'll update this as much as I can, and as much as my every changing hyperfixations allow me to.
N E Wae its about 1,300 words I hope Y'all like it. ________________________________________________________________________________
Nines was not good at expressing emotions. He most definitely felt them after he had deviated. After he deviated, he felt so many emotions, and he felt a rush of them all at once. The one he would never forget was the tightness in this chest where a human heart would be when he first saw his partner, Detective Reed, after deviating. He supposed all of that emotion had been building up and he just couldn't feel them. What he didn't know was that, much to his annoyance at first, Gavin felt those same feelings when he looked at his partner as well. What happened in between the moment he saw Gavin again and the present was sort of a blur to both of them. There was a long talk about what had happened, and a lot of feelings shared (it took a lot for Gavin to open up, but he decided it was worth it after he made Nines swear he'd tell one). Anything else in between was a blur. All either man knew was that they were happy with the outcome.
That outcome was a relationship. It took Gavin a lot of reflecting before he finally decided he would be okay with having a committed relationship with an android because, he determined, Nines was hardly android like anymore. Of course it was still sort of obvious Nines was one. For starters, he had kept his LED. He had told Gavin he did not see a need to remove it. Second of all, he still had his incredible android intelligence. Not even deviation could take away Nines's intelligence. Gavin decided that being with Nines was more important to him than the fact that Nines wasn't human. He emoted like one, and that was all that mattered, Gavin had decided. He realized he had made the right decision when he saw the smile on Nines's face and the feeling of his embrace when Gavin told him his decision.
That had been nearly a month ago. Now, Nines and Gavin were back to work at the DPD, partners once again. Almost as soon as they went back to work, a case file sat on Gavin's desk just waiting to be investigated. The irritated look on Gavin's face amused Nines for the first time. Of course, the two couldn't catch a break. When Gavin read the case file, his face dropped and he immediately handed it to Nines. Nines's reaction was nearly the same as he closed his eyes and placed the file back down on the desk. The way they looked at each other spoke a million words, and they realized they were thinking the exact same thing. "This is going to be impossible. There's hardly any significant detail," Gavin huffed, crossing his arms over his broad chest. Nines opened his eyes and nodded. "Maybe there is, we just have to look harder?" He suggested hopefully, although he wasn't even sure he believed himself. Gavin scoffed and shrugged. "I think we're just gonna have to pray for leads on this one," he said, and Nines couldn't have agreed more.
They were now about a week into the same seemingly unsolvable investigation. There they sat on Gavin's faded brown couch in the living room of his shoebox apartment. Everything they had on the case was spread out across Gavin's stained and chipped coffee table. A few candles were lit around the room, and the T.V. played something softly in the background that neither detective paid attention to. Nines was sat at the end of the couch, his head propped up in his hand, elbow on the couch's wobbly armrest. His eyes were fixed on the files in front of him as he wracked his android brain for some sort of solution. Gavin was sitting beside his partner, his legs up on the couch, and his head resting on Nines's shoulder. A blanket was draped across Gavin's legs, and his tabby cat, Cookie, chewed at the fuzzy blanket material by Gavin's feet. Gavin, too, was reviewing the case in front of him. At least he was trying to as best he could when his tired eyes kept closing as a result of his exhaustion. Nines's gentle hand absentmindedly rubbing at his back wasn't exactly helping to keep him awake, either.
Nines tore his eyes away from the files, and took a moment to look over at his half asleep partner. A small smile formed on Nines's face at the sight of his sleepy lover. Intimate moments like this weren't always the most common when it came to him and Gavin. Of course they had their soft moments and cuddles after a hard day and their gentle kisses. However, Gavin was still reluctant to show some parts of himself to Nines, so moments like this, where Gavin was so vulnerable, were sort of rare.
Nines shrugged his shoulder a bit to get Gavin's attention. The latter groaned, and looked up at his partner with half lidded eyes and his head tilted in question. "Come on, Gav. Time for you to go to bed," Nines whispered gently. Gavin only nodded as he swung his legs over the couch and stood up, Nines following shortly after. Gavin slipped himself into his partner's arms, who gladly gave him a hug. Nines was always perfectly warm, which Gavin adored because he was always cold.
After a moment, Nines pulled away and took Gavin by the hand, leading him to Gavin's small bedroom. Nines pulled back the gray duvet, and Gavin crawled into his usual spot in the bed. Nines thumbed across his sleepy partner's shoulder before planting a gentle kiss to his forehead and beginning to walk away. Before he could, though, his hand was caught in a weak grip, and he turned to see Gavin looking at him again. "Stay? I know you don't sleep but..." Gavin muttered, pulling the duvet over his flushed cheek. Nines hummed and nodded, fondly smiling at his partner. " Of course I will," he whispered as he crawled into the bed on the other side, and under the covers with Gavin. Gavin immediately cuddled closer to Nines, feeling his warmth once again and smiling contently. Nines was laying on his back, and Gavin was snuggled into his side with his head resting on Nines's solid chest. Nines wrapped his arms around Gavin, his fingers beginning to trace patterns on the tired man's back. When he was sure Gavin was asleep, his gentle patterns turned into soft tracings of the words "I love you." Nines wasn't good at expressing his emotions, especially the fact that he loved Gavin, so he showed it this way. Slightly startling him, Nines heard Gavin whisper "I love you, too, Tin Can," before he felt Gavin's breathing even out as he fully fell asleep. With a satisfied smile on his lips and an overwhelming feeling of love, Nines closed his own eyes and sent himself into a rest mode.
