Ron’s Point of View
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Here we were. Family gathered, a tree shining brightly in the background, presents and the smell of apple pie surrounding us.
The true definition of a perfect Christmas.
“Dinner is ready!” Narcissa Malfoy announces, just as trays of food begin appearing on the table in front of us.
Lucius Malfoy was released from Azkaban the year after Sarah and I got married, direct orders from Sarah herself. She released him on one condition:
The Weasleys and the Malfoys had to settle all bad blood amongst their families.
And look! Fifteen years later, here we are, gathered in Malfoy Manor, probably more than fifty of us, celebrating Christmas together, as a family.
There’s so many of us between the parents, the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and the children. Too many of us. But as mum always said “Each family member here is like another Christmas gift!”
We all eat, pretending like Harry and Sarah aren’t really gone. I mean, how could I pretend to that the woman I’ve loved for the better part of my life is not missing? And pretend the first friend I’ve ever made at Hogwarts is just here, enjoying everything?
I can’t. Even though the conversations are still going, not having their presence here is torturous.
I’d rather it be the other way around.
A voice surprises us all. “Dad,” Joey announces from the other end of the table. I take a sip of water before answering him back.
“Yes?”
”Where did mum go exactly?”
“Excuse me?” I raise an eyebrow at him. I think he’s taken this the worst.
”Where did mum go? Like, a place? Who is she with?”
Everyone’s eyes turn and face me, urging me to answer. All along I’ve been saying how I didn’t know where Sarah was, and who she is with, but I can’t lie anymore. Well, besides from this next tiny lie, I was done.
“She’s with Uncle Harry,” I say calmly. “She sent a letter and everything. And by the way, she wishes everyone a very Happy Christmas.”
No one questions me further as I begin to start eating again, quietly chewing the delicious roast ham that Mrs. Malfoy and mum prepared for us.
We open presents after, each putting on fake happiness as we watch the children’s faces light up. No one is especially cheery in this situation.
When Joey opens up his new broom, he puts on a smile. It’s forced, though, I can tell. He does the same thing when he fakes a smile as I do. He looks at the item first, and then the smile reaches his mouth, and briefly flickers behind his eyes before they go grim. His crystal blue—Sarah’s blue—eyes don’t sparkle with wonder and awe. They just glow. Like he lit a candle behind them, because he didn’t know anything else to do.
All of the other kids begin gushing to him, screaming and cheering, riling up the owls that we set loose in the Manor. The squawk and hoot at us, imploring us to remain quiet. I just fake a smile, exactly as Joey does, and watch as Emily and Bella open their gifts.

“No, mum, we’ll be in art room!” Scorpius tells Aunt Audrey.
