Lily lay awake in the Dormitory at about ten o'clock the following day which, thankfully, was a Sunday. She played about with her hair whilst Hermione, Mary and Marlene went down to breakfast. For some reason, she just wasn't hungry. And she was tired. Although she had come to bed early the night before, it had taken her hours to fall asleep. Mostly because of the thought of a certain boy...
Lily sat up with a shocked gasp as something flew into the Dormitory, she was about to scream out when she realised it was only paper. The paper bird flew towards her. It stopped in front of her for a few seconds and then flew in circles around her head. Getting the message, Lily plucked in out of the sky. She flattened it, and put it on her bedside table. She pulled on her casual robes and sat back down on the bed before opening the letter and reading.
A letter to Lily Evans -
I finally get it. You just don't like me. I could disappear from your life. Tell me it one more time and I swear I will; i'll stop asking you on dates, I'll stop teasing you, I'll stop talking to you altogether. I just want you to be happy and if I can't do that then I don't deserve you.
I know that it might seem like a joke to you. But I honestly mean it. I honestly have feelings for you. I love you, Lily Evans. And I'd sacrifice my own happiness in return that you have yours.
Say it one more time and I'll never bother you ever again. I'll give up. But don't ever expect me to stop loving you. Because I know that you're the one.
Always,
James Potter
With shaking hands, Lily closed the letter. Somehow, tears were falling onto the parchment. How she was feeling was indescribable.
But now she knew.
She gripped the letter tightly as she raced down the steps and into the Common Room. She ran up to the boys Dormitory and slammed the door. There was a moan the other side. Lily slammed it again, a little too hard. The door burst open. Yet only Peter was on the other side, in bed. He squealed in fury and surprise, covering himself completely in his blanket.
"Where's Potter?" Lily demanded.
"The Hall... are you crying?" He mumbled, but before he had even finished Lily was racing back down the steps. She ran across the Common Room, ignoring the shouted questions that followed her. She just ran and ran and ran right down to the Hall. Nearly a hundred students and most of the staff were eating breakfast, but she ignored them. She rushed into the Great Hall, tears still streaming down her cheeks as she shouted out. "Potter! James Potter!" A number of students stood up as she stormed past them, to the quivering figure of James Potter, who immediately had stood up. She ran in-between the tables, right to him. A thousand words rushed through her head that she could say. But in the end there were no words. She collided with James, gripped him tight and kissed him.
She kissed him like she had never kissed anyone before. She crashed her lips down to his, wrapped her hands around his neck and pushed him closer. There was a tiny moment of complete shock for James, but immediately he was kissing her back. Years of tension, awkwardness, hatred then love, anticipation and relief passed between them. All their years had built up to this moment. And they made the best of it. Maybe the kiss lasted seconds, or minutes, perhaps even hours. But that was meaningless to the two, overwhelmed and oblivious with passion, longing and love. When they finally broke apart, Lily still with her hands around his neck, she whispered "you ass."
Then James laughed shakily, his eyes lit up with love and complete happiness, as well as disbelief. He could have fit a thousand words into that moment, but their moment was caught off by the cheers that erupted around them. All of the Griffindor table stood up in a standing ovation, whilst a number of other students on the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables clapped enthusiastically too. But their friends clapped and cheered and wolf whistled the loudest as James grabbed Lily around the waist and whirled her up into the air in circles as she giggled excitedly. They sat down as the clapping subsided and the teachers at the staff table began to grow impatient. Instantaneously, a number of boys clapped James on the shoulder in a typical masculine manner. Whilst Lily was hugged and gaped at by her friends. For the first time ever, Lily and James sat side by side, both flushed with joy and slight embarrassment at the attention. They ate their breakfasts awkwardly amidst their curious friends. Sirius slid in next to Hermione and whispered "Finally, hey?" Hermione beamed widely in reply, completely overjoyed for Lily and smug that her predictions had come to be.
"Finally." She agreed, avoiding the look she got from Lily rolling her eyes.
Finally, they had kissed. Finally, they were happy. Finally they could express the most important feelings of all, hope and love.
