Hermione's older sister Izzia was the only one waiting for her at the train station. It was a slight disappointment, even though Izzia was nicer than usual. She greeted Hermione with a hug and a warm conversation. Then they drove off in Izzia's brand new Citroën car back to their home, or rather, Hermione's family's home.

When they arrived, Josh was the one to open the door. Her 11 year old brother squealed with delight and threw himself at Hermione, almost choking her in a big hug.

"I missed you, Hermy." He said, his voice muffled in her shoulder.

"I missed you too Joshie," she said quietly, blinking back a tear.

"Hermione." her mum called out to her not very enthusiastically. Hermione reluctantly untangled herself from her brother and hugged her mum. Then her dad appeared and she was hugging him too. Even stroppy 14 year old Jenny gave her a stiff hug.

But it wasn't the greeting a normal family would give their daughter for a welcome home. After the first two minutes of meeting and greeting they were a lot more laid back. Jenny went back to her room, Izzia to her room to where her boyfriend waited and her dad went outside for a cigarette. Only her mum and brother sat with her, asking about her life at school. In a few short sentences, Hermione explained that she was happy and everything was going great. Satisfied, her mum joined her dad outside and Josh talked to her enthusiastically about his school. She listened eagerly, at least one person in her family talked to her with interest. After a while, Josh then talked more sadly about their parents, who had apparently been arguing a lot. That was nothing new, but Josh was still upset. Hermione contorted her brother just as she had when he was a baby and she was only just over five. They had been very close, and then she left for Hogwarts and she was afraid he would forget about her. But he never did. And every year that she had come back, he had greeted her happily. The only member of her family that didn't make her feel like awful about herself.

There was no special meal that night, and certainly not a celebration. As always, Hermione's presence was not particularly important. Hermione went to sleep that night in the room that she shared with Jenny, wishing that she had stayed at Hogwarts.
