As I got up the next morning, the only thing I could think about was Mama. She had fallen asleep in my arms, as I waited for Dad to get home. He was usually better at bandaging Mama up when she would accidently hurt herself. I hated seeing her like that. She was usually sweet and bubbly, in fact, she was one of the most positive people I knew. Except when she wasn't. She had bad days sometimes, like everyone else; except for Mama, a bad day was the worst day.
For years, my entire family had used the term "apple pie" whenever Mama had her breakdowns. It was just in case we were around friends or family we didn't think needed to know about Mama. It was also a way to talk about it without making one of us, especially Mama, upset. It's odd, I know, but it's all we know to do at this point.
I lifted myself from my bed hesitantly, as though I could stretch out the summer just a bit longer. I sighed, realizing how futile my efforts were, and stumbled out my door and into the hallway. I heard music blaring and Clover was singing right along with it, impossibly louder than the music already was. I walked up to the bathroom door and knocked.
"I'm kinda busy in here!" My little sister yelled from the bathroom.
"Yeah, well you're not the only person who has to get ready!" I screamed back.
"Well, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, so..." She replied.
I huffed out a deep breath before heading back to my room. Since the queen was using the bathroom, I decided I might as well get ready and assembled my outfit. I decided on my black jeans, a grey crop top, my red flannel top, and my burgundy Doc Martens. It was getting later and later, and with Clover taking her time in the bathroom, I didn't have any time to do my hair. I quickly pulled it into a loose braid and ran back to the bathroom.
This time, I pounded on the door and, to my surprise, Clover opened it, rolled her eyes, and strolled back into her room. I rushed into the bathroom and quickl brushed my teeth before running downstairs to prepare my breakfast.
I grabbed a banana and a pre-made protein shake from the fridge and grabbed my backpack from where I had left it the night before, the living room floor.
When I finally got to my car, I noticed Kendall already sitting in the passanger's seat on her phone. Yes, she has a key to my car. She's my best friend, of course she does. As soon as I opened the car door, she was flashing me her famous dazzling smile. I sent her back a weak smile in return and pulled out of the driveway in silence.
"So... how's your mom doing?" She asked as we turned out of our neighborhood.
"Last night was bad." I took a deep breath as she began biting her nails.
This is the first day of your senior year, make the most of it.
"I noticed you and Max got pretty close last night." I said, shooting her a sly smirk. Her face grew a deep shade of red.
