"Guys come one! We told them we'd be there by one!" I yelled up the stairs.
"It's Max, I doubt he'll care." Lucas scoffed as he pulled on his shoes.
"Yes, but I care." I rolled my eyes as I walked upstairs to see what on earth they were doing. I went into Alex's room first, finding her attempting to fix her hair. I sighed, walking up behind her and tying her hair into its customary headband. I kissed the top of her head. "Baby, why don't you go down and help Daddy start the car."
"Okay, Mommy." Alex smiled as she ran down the stairs calling out for her father.
Next was Mason. I found him still playing with his cars in his room. I crossed my arms, leaning in the doorway, waiting for him to notice.
"Mason, it's time to go."
"I don't want to!" He yelled. Lord, he's such a three-nager.
"Liam will be there. Don't you want to see him? And Aunt Kenny? Uncle Max?" He still didn't budge. "You can take two cars with you." With that, he was sprinting past me and down the stairs.
Soon we were all in the car, quietly driving to Max and Kendall's. Sike! Mason hadn't had a nap, so he was freaking out, and Alex kept trying to get mine or Lucas's attention to tell us a story. Be a parent they said, it'll be easy they said...
I sighed in relief as we finally pulled into their driveway. Lucas grabbed Alex, while I garbbed a now-sleeping-Mason. Alex squirmed from Lucas's hold, sprinting up the driveway and marching through the door. Lucas put an arm around me as we walked up together. I laid Mason down on the couch, while Lucas proceeded to the kitchen, where Kendall and Max haphazardly prepared lunch.
"Hey guys! Just have a seat! Lunch will be ready soon!" Kendall shouted as she handed Max a plate of wings. He promptly took it out to the grill, with Lucas following closely behind him.
"So he's out?" Kendall whispered, gesturing to the figure of my sleeping son.
"Yep, he cried for the whole drive and fell asleep as we pulled into your neighborhood. Where'd Alex and Liam go?"
"Liam got a train set from my parents for his birthday, so he had to show her."
"Lord, I can't believe he's already eight." I sighed.
"Believe it. Alex is seven!"
"Don't remind me." I rolled my eyes.
"So, I haven't seen you since your vacation! How was it?" Kendall diverted her attention away from whatever she was making.
"It was amazing. I feel bad, but not having the kids around was honestly so nice." I whispered. "It was like we were ten years younger." I chuckled.
"Ugh, yeah I haven't ever been away from Liam for more than a day."
"I guess some day we'll miss this. We were never home in high school." I laughed.
"It's so weird to think about high school. Do you ever miss it?" She asked.
"Not really. I've never been happier than I am now." I smiled as I looked out at my husband, who looked very enthralled in his conversation with Max- most likely it had something to do with the temperature the grill should be at or something.
Lunch had just finished, and we were all gathered around the picnic table in the backyard. Mason was cuddled up in my lap, still not 100% ready to be done with his nap. Lucas sat next to me, hand on my thigh. Kendall and Max were positioned across from us, with Alex and Liam seated at a smaller table a few feet away from ours. I looked over to see Mason holding Alex's hand as they got up to play on the playset.
"Look at them." Kendall smiled as she peered out at our children playing together.
"Wouldn't it be funny if they dated?" I joked.
"No." Lucas frowned.
Who knew that the high school player would become such an annoying overprotective dad? We all laughed, enjoying the beautiful summer day.
