Eila's POV
University is amazing - when I look back at my years of high school, things were so restricted back then. You had to do what everyone told you, impress all the teachers. Here you have utter, complete freedom.
It's a beautiful Tuesday morning, as I stroll through the gates a soft breeze tickles my strands of hair that are pulled back in a lose bun today. I clutch my books to my chest and my backpack thumps on my back as I walk to class. The essay writing last night was an absolute chore - I had writers block, and also my mind kept wandering to the exquisite curve of Joe's biceps and the adorable way he laughs.
If I want to achieve in this course I'm going to have to block him from my mind when it comes to studying.
I arrive at the lecture hall which is already bustling. I scan the crowd and spot Zach smiling at me, his arm waving in the air. He might be a bit flirty but at least he's a friend.
"Hey. You look really nice today." He compliments as I take a seat next to him. I raise my eyebrows slightly as I look down at my outfit - it's nothing special really, merely some nice denim jeans, a black tank top and my favourite grey cardy.
"Thanks..." I say shyly as he runs his eyes over my body. He is being a bit too creepy.
"Zach... I'm kindof involved with someone..." I inform him, watching his face fall from cocky to conserved.
"Oh..." He says quietly as he turns in his seat, away from me. Crap, I've probably just ruined one of my only friendships here. He was probably just being nice when he complimented me, however something tells me he was trying a bit TOO hard.
Thankfully, Professor Adams strolls into the hall soon after that, so I avoid any awkwardness with Zach. The minute he opens his mouth, once again the entire room is transformed. I never knew someone could be this good at public speaking - every word he utters, even if it's about Commerce, keeps me rapt. I have to remind myself to scrawl down notes as he talks, that's how involved I am.
A few pages worth of notes and a very sore hand later, the class finally draws to a close. I awkwardly say goodbye to Zach, who barely returns the favour. If he's seriously going to be hostile to me just because I friendzoned him, he's a bit of an asshole.
"Zach, can we just get along as friends? You seem like a cool guy, please don't take this badly." I say to him as he clears away his stuff and gets up to leave. He sighs a little bit before answering.
"Sure. I'm sorry, I should've known you would be taken. I mean, look at you." He grins, making his dimples pop out. I roll my eyes.
"Zach, that's not what friends say to one another."
"You're right, sorry. I am uncontrollable." He laughs, and it's a warm, carefree sound. I join him, glad to have moved past whatever awkwardness there was before.
"Lunch?" He raises his eyesbrows as he asks.
"Sure, where do you want to go?" I smile, following him out of the lecture hall.
"There's a cafe just round the corner from here, it does the absolute best food." He grins as I follow him out onto campus. It turns out the cafe really is right around the corner - we barely walk for 5 minutes before we arrive.
Zach was right about the food - I ordered a panini jam packed full of delicious ingredients. Zach and I chatted while we ate, talking about the class and our essays. I really like Zach, he's easy to talk to and makes me laugh alot.
"So, who is the lucky guy?" Zach asks me while I'm busy chewing my food. Somehow I knew this question would come up. I study Zach's face and I notice his smile looks a bit forced. I really hope what I said earlier actually sunk in.
