Aizawa rushed into Recovery Girl's office with energy that would have surprised everyone that knew him.
"Where's my friend?" he demanded, looking right at Recovery Girl.
When Shouta met eyes with the short woman, the expression she had tore him to shreds.
"She was already fatally wounded when she was brought in," she said gently, and Shouta swore he saw tears forming. "She lost so much blood, even I couldn't do enough."
"Can I see her, please?"
Recovery Girl nodded, even though she knew the state that the girl was in would devastate Shouta.
"Back room. It shouldn't be locked."
Shouta steeled himself, heading down the hallway and, impendingly, toward his friend.
Nothing - not even years of fighting or saving people or dealing with wounds - could have prepared him for the raw emotion he felt upon seeing this girl, his best friend, looking so hurt.
"Shouta," she said, eyes watering. "I thought I'd...never see you..."
"Save your strength," the man warned, voice wavering. "Tough it out. You're stronger than this."
"Am I?"
That voice, the same meek voice he'd heard so many years ago, threw him off. She was a pro. She had saved so many lives, captured so many bad guys. How could she doubt herself now?
"I did everything like you taught me," she said, sniffing and trying not to cry. "I...fought with eveything I had, it just wasn't enough."
"Don't talk like that," Shouta reprimanded. "You did perfect."
"Even before he moved, I was...aiming right at him. I was prepared before I knew what was happening."
"Just like I taught you."
"I counted to three and used my quirk. Just like you said. But he avoided it. He was too fast. Or was I too slow?"
"Save your strength," Shouta repeated, looking out. "Yagi's coming."
He heard a sob escape the girl at the name. "Yagi?" she whispered. "What will he think? How could I be so stupid? I-"
She didn't have time to continue berating herself, since Yagi himself had just burst through the door. He was breathing heavily, and, although it pained him, Shouta knew the two needed alone time. He took it upon himself to leave, taking a glance because he knew. He'd never see her breathing again.
"I...fought as hard as I could," the girl cried, meeting her dear husband's eyes. "I did everything just right."
"I know, I know," Yagi whispered, placing his hands over hers. "I know you did everything just right."
"I think...he was too fast for me. Before I knew it, I was looking at the sky. I couldn't see anything for a minute. Then, I was here."
Yagi's hands trembled over his wife's as he held back tears. "You did perfect. You are perfect."
"I failed. Those people...God, the people, they were all helpless. I couldn't do anything for them. I'm useless."
"You're perfect," Yagi said again. "I...love you so much. Hang in there."
"I don't think..."
"You will make it," he said, tears falling. "You can't go."
"Yagi, I'm not..."
"How can I save the world if I can't protect the person I love most? How can I be the vision of hope of my love is gone?"
They both cried, holding each other's hands gently.
"Yagi, it hurts so much," she admitted, breaking down in front of her husband. "Even if I made it, I...I don't think I could live with all of this pain. What good would it do me to be alive...if every day this pain was killing me?"
Yagi thought about his own injury, which had left him weak for years, and wondered what toll this would leave on his wife. She was right. There would be a lasting effect that she could never recover from.
"I don't want to die," she stated, squeezing Yagi's hand, "but that might be what's left for me."
Even though Yagi knew that she was right, he couldn't stand this. Was he expected to just let her die?
"Please, say goodbye," she whispered, sounding weaker by the second. "I can't go without saying bye."
"How can you ask me to tell you goodbye forever?" Yagi sighed, tears falling.
Without responding, she grabbed his hand with as much strength as she had left. Still wordless, she kept him close to her as she breathed deeply.
Seeing her so close only made Yagi feel a million times worse. Those burns and wounds across her gorgeous face. The cuts and bruises all along her once soft and soothing arms. The undeniable look of knowing what her next move was.
"Goodbye, Yagi," she said firmly, smiling. "I'll surely be seeing you on the other side."
Any tears Yagi had left to shed were released then and there. Hearing those words...
"Goodbye, my love," he whispered back, before placing a final kiss to her lips.
"Now, go home," she told him. "Save the world. Make me proud."
And that was the last thing that he ever heard from the love of his life.
