Lauren and Joey were cuddled up under a blanket on the couch watching Christmas movies when they heard the mail come through the door.
"Is my mom's Christmas card there?" Lauren called as Joey got up to retrieve the post.
"Yeah," he said, recognising the handwriting and passing the envelope over to her, rifling disinterestedly through the other bills and leaflets.
Lauren tore the envelope open, taking out the card which her mom had forgotten to post in time for it to get across the country before Christmas. Joey sat back under the blanket, his arm automatically going around Lauren.
"Well this is new," she muttered, staring at the front of the card.
Joey looked down at the writing and felt his heart miss a beat. Where it would usually say 'to our daughter and your boyfriend' was instead written 'to our daughter and son-in-law'.
He glanced anxiously at Lauren to see her reaction, but to his relief she was smiling.
"Do you think they're trying to tell me something?"
Joey grinned. "Your mom did tell me I was the son she always wanted."
Lauren laughed, rolling her eyes. "No she didn't."
"They do love you more though," she said after a beat, leaning her head on his shoulder.
Joey looked down at her. "That's not true."
"It is. But I don't mind," she said, tilting her head up to press a kiss to her lips. If it meant her family loved Joey as much as she did, she'd take second best.
