“What time is the guy in the trench coat coming?” Jay asks me, referring to Harry who promised to return today.
I turn my body away from Jay, hiding the slight smile on my face. It’s been there for the majority of the morning as I wait impatiently for Harry to arrive. Nolan has caught me several times smiling to myself and each time he does, he raises his eyebrows as if questioning me, but I shrug my shoulders, reminding him that I’ll tell him later when we’re alone.
Yesterday, Harry and I had brainstormed a lot of ideas for our escape, but nothing seemed to work out. I think the problem was that he wasn’t quite familiar with the surroundings and rules of Detention Barn.
I could tell that he was frustrated from the way his cheeks would turn a little red and his eyes would squint. If I’m being completely honest, I found it rather cute and adorable, but I decided not to tell him. I don’t think he’d like to hear that.
“Soon,” I answer Jay. “He said he’ll be here after lunch.”
I glance at the clock hanging on the wall. It’s a little after noon.
It’s quiet in the shop—like usual. Jay makes everything awkward. Nolan is intimidated by him and I guess I am too. Though, even if it were just me and Nolan in the room, I think I’d still be abnormally quiet because the silence gives me more time to think about Harry.
And thinking about Harry makes me happy.
I look out the window as a car pulls into the driveway. A familiar black hat and black coat steps out and makes his way towards the entrance.
I pinch my arm from giggling as I watch Harry stride into the room, taking awkward little footsteps. He carries a black duffle bag in his hand—something I’m assuming he’s using as a prop in order to trick Jay. He’s supposed to be a mechanic of some sort, but I’m almost positive most mechanics don’t wear all black and look like a creepy pedophile.
He approaches the counter, glancing at Nolan and Jay before looking at me.
“Michelle, I will need your help,” he says, disguising his voice once again.
I bite my lip, desperately trying to keep the giggles inside my mouth. I nod my head without saying a word. I can’t trust my voice at the moment. It’d probably be too high and bubbly from the excitement coursing through my body.
I glance at Jay and excuse myself before leading Harry outside to the chicken coop. We sit on the old fence together before he lets out a sigh and takes off his disguise.
“These clothes are so hot,” he says, fanning his face with his hand.
His cheeks are flushed from the heat and some sweat pools underneath his eyes. I smile before fanning his face too.
“I feel like a deity,” he laughs as he dramatically lays his hand across his forehead, letting his head fall backwards. “Where are my grapes and why aren’t you hand feeding me them?”
He peeks one eye open, turning his head slightly to get a better look at me. I roll my eyes at him as he gives me an amused smile in return, causing a small dimple to appear on one of his cheeks.
“Don’t get carried away, your majesty,” I tease him.
He mock gasps at me before laughing and wiping at the sweat that glistens over his skin. He playfully wipes it on my arm, giving me a lopsided grin as he watches me squeal with ‘disgust’.
Although, in my opinion, his sweat doesn’t bother me at all and I wouldn’t mind if he did it again because every time he touches me, his fingertips send me into an absolute, blissful ecstasy.
