A Baby's Promise

"push!" "AHHHHH!" "come on, you're doing great!" Maggie held Lori's hand as I croached down ready for the baby.

"come on Lori" "ahhhhh ah!" I paused and looked at my hands. "Lori wait" she looked expectantly at me as I looked up from my bloody hands. "something's wrong".

Maggie helped Lori lay down "something's wrong with your cervix but you're fully dilated" Lori nodded and looked from Maggie to Carl to me.

"you have to do a cesarean" I shook my head "no. Maggie's more qualified than me" she smiled slightly at me. "but I've known you longer. I trust you with my son, with my life and now this" tears slipped down my cheeks as I watched her call over Carl.

I stood up and walked back and forth, wondering if there was another way. I walked back to Lori and carl "don't let the world spoil you" everyone at this point was crying. Maggie was sobbing her heart out as Carl ran into her arms and I felt like the bad guy as I took my knife and ran it across the dotted lines Hershel and Carol put there for a "Plan B".

I sobbed silently, listening to Lori's screams but when they subsided I knew I had to get the baby out ASAP. "Maggie, help me" she walked over and I told her what to do.

A few seconds later I was holding a new baby girl in my arms wrapped in my leather jacket. We all started walking up the stairs when Carl paused.

I turned to look at him "Carl, don't look" Maggie begged/pleaded "come on" I nodded towards the door "we can't just leave her like that. what if she turns?" I felt my eyes soften to Carl's words. "We'll wait outside."

A few seconds of standing a gun shot rang out. I felt a tear slip down my cheek as I heard Maggie sob. Carl then joined us with bloody hands and his gun hanging by his side in his hand.

We then walked in silence the way we came and back outside. Everyone or almost everyone was out there. Once we walked out Rick looked round expectantly but when his eyes landed in the bundle in my arms he paused. I shook my head and looked down as Carl ran to hug his dad and they both burst into tears.

I then handed Maggie the baby as I felt tears fall. I saw Daryl standing in the crowd looking at me. I sniffed and walked right into his arms, sobbing into his shoulder.

A couple of minutes later I let go of Daryl and just stared at the ground. I felt fingers lift my chin up and thumbs wipe tears from my cheeks. I sniffed and smiled just as we heard movement. Rick had gotten up from kneeling on the ground. He took a quick glimpse of the baby and grabbed an Axe or something. I thought he was going to do harm to the baby which then I would have to kick his ass but instead he walked past Maggie and into the building the way we came.

Rick was gone for quite a while. I was holding the baby in my arms while Hershel checked her over. "She seems healthy enough but if she doesn't get any formual then she's not gonna survive long" I frowned at that.

"ok no. We're not losing anyone else" Daryl walked to his bike and threw his poncho on before climbing aboard. I gave the baby back to Maggie and walked towards Daryl.

"I'm coming too" Daryl just nodded and I got on just as Glenn opened the gates. it felt good to have the wind blow my hair back and to finally get out and feel free. I felt like a prisoner in there. which was sort of ironic.

I just wish I never made that stupid promise to Lori, Hershel and Carol. I hadn't maybe Lori would still be here with us. Its all my fault.
