Connor approached Evan Hansen during the summer, he found him at his most vulnerable, saved him from himself, and let him latch onto him. How had he longed for this! To be Evan Hansen's everything, it was a dream come true.

Connor had been watching Evan for a really long time, longer than he cared to admit, and he knew everything about him. Because he knew everything, he was aware of Evan's crush on his sister, but Evan was like him; so Connor made quick work of ridding him of that crush, Zoe would've ruined him.

He planned everything, so that Evan would be witness to how Zoe was really like, at the end of it Evan pulled him into a hug, telling him she was wrong about him, Connor clung to him letting tears stream down from his eyes; Evan didn't have to know their real meaning.

Connor kept doing it, mostly complaining about his family, but Zoe specifically, and listening to Evan complain about his own issues patiently, he had no qualms on telling the other just how badly he wished to erase those issues for him, Evan always smiled at him and reciprocated the statement, unknowing that they were claiming different things. It was ok, Connor knew Evan couldn't solve his family, but he didn't care, as long as he got what he wanted.

Connor had a clear goal, make Evan Hansen depend on him, to the point the other would want nothing more than to be with Connor forever, because Connor wanted Evan all for himself, but he could wait until Evan wanted him too.

In one of their hang out sessions at Evan's house, Heidi Hansen made an entrance. Connor had been weary of her, because she was someone Evan cared a lot about, but she was also part of why Connor was succeeding; so he felt conflicted towards her.

He soon learned that all Heidi wanted was for Evan to be happy; Connor could work with that, because that meant she wouldn't get in his way if his plan worked. It seemed like Connor's only real obstacle would be Kleinman.

Connor had a plan for how to get rid of Jared Kleinman, had seen him in the halls plenty, always with Evan, or in the lunch room, switching tables like he was in a game of musical chairs no one else was participating on.

Connor does it slowly, eggs Kleinman on subtly, always out of Evan's sight, but just so Kleinman's explosion happens where Evan can see it; it's a delicate balance, but Connor is good at what he does. With each fight that breaks, Evan forgives Jared less and less, and always takes care of Connor afterwards, when he starts taking his side Connor knows he's winning.

It breaks into a fight between the two, and they both spit horrible things about the other like poison, but Kleinman goes too far, steps out of line in such a way that Connor has to hold himself from attacking him then and there; he instead rushes to Evan, pulling him close, glares at Kleinman, and leads Evan away from there.

He doesn't need to hide his anger in front of Evan, because he will understand it in this particular situation, and it will remind him that Connor cares. Connor pretends to calm down, and walks Evan home.

Connor waits a week to make his move, in that time he pretends like he pushed the issue aside, but won't hesitate to step in if Kleinman approaches Evan again, which gets him a thankful smile from the quiet boy; Connor treasures that smile. He makes it look like a suicide.
