That night was one that began with happiness for the Wayne family, as they walked out of the Monarch Theatre into the coldness of Gotham streets. Bruce, Tomas and Martha Wayne's youngest happily walked in between his parents. Their oldest Carmen Wayne walked beside her mother her arm looped with hers as they laughed, it was one of the few times when they all could just enjoy each other's company.

They all turned into an alleyway not to far from the theatre for a quick short cut, not knowing what was to come.

"Mom! Dad! Do you think Alfred could make us some hot chocolate before bed?" Bruce asked smiling up at them charmingly.

Carmen's bell like laugh echoed as her brother sent her a wink, knowing that their parents would cave in.

"Well, I don't see why no-" Tomas froze, the rest of them following after when they realized why.

"Careful folks!" The man dress in black head to toe said, his gun raised ready to shoot.

Martha grabbed onto her two kids arms in shock, Carmen gasped staring at the mysterious man wide eyed.

"Stay calm kids" Tomas said, placing a hand on Bruce's shoulder.

"Give me your money!" He shouted jerking the gun towards them.

"No problem. We'll cooperate." Tomas once again replied staring him in the eyes.

"The necklaces." He growled, pointing with his gun at the matching pearl necklaces around Carmen and Martha's necks, Carmen narrowed her eyes as Martha quickly took hers off and nudged her daughter to do the same. Carmen followed her mother reluctantly and they both handed them over. As he took them harshly Martha's broke, beads of pearls feel onto the ground dinging as they did.

Without warning the dark man pointed the gun at Tomas Wayne, a piercing gunshot was the cannon signifying his life was gone.

"Father!" Carmen screamed her mother's grip holding her from rushing to his side.

Another piercing gunshot rang. The grip her mother had on her slipped as she flung back, the siblings watched in horror as they became orphans.

Without thinking Carmen jumped in front of her brother, tears streaming down her face as she looked her parents killer in the eye like her father had. "Please. Not my brother" she cried surprised she could even get a word out.

He lowered his gun, a breath Carmen didn't know she was holding back released. The dark man started walking forward and then shoved past the two, running back the way the family had come. When there was four.

"Mom!" Bruce cried running to their mothers side.

"Dad!" Carmen ran to their fathers.

Neither of them got a response, only their parents lifeless eyes staring forever upward. The two Wayne's turned towards each other, their parents blood on their hands and soon clung onto each other for dear life.

To Carmen it felt like hours went by as they screamed and cried, she cradled her brother shaking terrified that the dark man would come back and change his mind.

Eventually the cops had come, far to late and looked in horror at the two sibling in between their fallen parents. The rest had been a blur to Carmen, a blur of blue and red. How she wanted to scream at them for not coming sooner, how she wanted to rip their throats out so they could know how Bruce and her felt when they screamed theirs out. But she couldn't and she wouldn't. She had to be the older sister she was and be there for Bruce.

From that day on Carmen changed, she could feel herself slipping away and as much as she wanted to she masked it and eventually that mask would slip too.
