Chapter Twelve
Ain't No Rest For The Wicked
"After that, things unfolded as you could guess. Matthew and I realized we weren't in the same world as before, thanks to a rather uncomfortable conversation with an angry doorman and a trip to the library for information on earthquakes in the past year. We were stranded in a new world with no idea how to get home. Needless to say, it took awhile for us to shake the shock." Vlad laughed nervously, trying to lighten the heavy mood.
"Once we had come to terms with the situation, I set to work trying to find a way back. Though, by the fact that I'm sitting here now, it obviously didn't work. Eventually, I noticed that a nearby college had a paranormal major and decided to try and reach out for a different source of information. I didn't realize you and Carla would the dragged into all of this..." His story ended unceremoniously but I still felt knocked back by the story. Who wouldn't be shocked? I just learned that I've gotten tangled into a plot not only concern personifications of nations from another world but also the fucking seasons? Who comes up with shit like this?
"Hey, please say something so I know I didn't ruin your mind." Vlad said, snapping me back to reality. I shook off the initial shock, running a hand through my hair in an attempt to pull myself together.
"Yeah, I'm all good. Just...processing. I knew this was complicated but damn, this is some Homestuck level stuff." I said. Vlad raised an eyebrow at my mention of homestuck , apparently not joining the movement. Matthew leaned over and whispered something to him that sent a flash of recognition across his face, mouth forming an 'oh'. Huh, never thought Matthew would be the homestuck in this situation but whatever.
"How did you guys go 100 years without anyone realizing you weren't aging?" I asked. The age old question of immortals, do you hide away or do you risk being found out.
"Well, we really kept to ourselves." Matthew said, "After a decade or so, we'd move apartment buildings so no one got suspicious and the bank accounts were surprisingly full. Vlad used the money more begrudgingly than I did but it worked out all right." Of course Matthew was okay. He's the master of lying low. I think he could go off the grid by simply thinking about it.
"We kept up to date with world affairs, though nothing seemed to affect us like it used to. A rough storm hit Romania without me even breaking a sweat and Canada went through a blizzard without Matthew getting sick." Vlad explained, seeming surprised still as he said it, "We're not connected to the nations of this world, like, at all? It's weird to watch the world cup without hearing crying in the room over because a team got eliminated."
"God, the world cup. I can only imagine how England would have reacted when France won in 2018." Matthew said with a laugh.
"Believe me, it was unbearable. He didn't shut up for a month straight." Arthur said from the doorway, walking in at the perfect conversational moment. Thanks Arthur, I've always wanted my life to become a Well-Made Play*.
Behind the Brit came the rest of the nation crew. Various conversations floated through the air, all combining together to much for me to piece certain parts out. This is what actually having large friend groups must feel like. Wild.
Soon, the familiar group had gathered in the living room once again. Everyone taking their previous spots, already falling into habits. I got up from the couch and walked over to Carla. She was chatting with Vladimir and filling him in on everything that happened during dinner.
The story included Ivan glaring at the waitress for the whole night since she refused to give him vodka as a drink, kudos to her for not even reacting, Feliciano and Lovino chatting with the Italian majors about how to properly cook the pizza and eventually taking over the entire Italian area of the restaurant, and Kiku going slightly overboard with the sweets section. I'd never think he'd have a sweet tooth but I don't know how else to describe three slices of pie and a bowl of ice cream.
