Chapter Twenty-Five

Coffee Makes Everything Better

Not surprisingly, a lot could go wrong.

In the course of a single hour, Gilbert tried to drag Liz and I into two different bars and got us thrown out of a restaurant.

The moment I saw the first bar sign depicting a busty woman in a very small bikini, I nearly vomited. Liz and I dragged Gilbert away but he wasn't planning to give up so soon. He lead us to a less conspicuous bar next. It appeared fine from the outside: a sign with no neon, newly painted with looping script that read 'The Hotspot'. However, I could smell the raging drunks from a block away and quickly redirected us to a nice middle ground. Or, what I thought would have been middle ground. We didn't stay inside of 'The Raven' for very long before Gilbert told us we had to leave.

How we got thrown out I'm not fully aware. All I know is one moment I was waiting to get a drink and suddenly Gilbert was rushing back to the table saying we had to leave right then as an angry waiter stared him down from behind the register. This lead us to where we stood now. Underneath the scorching sun with an empty stomach.

"Just let me pick a place already." Liz ordered. The command fell on deaf ears as Gil stared at his phone's dim screen. A stupid move considering it's near impossible to see the screen when it's underneath the sun.

"Nein! I know what I'm doing! You would just bring us to some girly wine place anyway!" He said, speaking as he compared the mobile map to the street we stood on. Liz frowned, a noise rumbling in the back of her throat as she raised a hand to wack Gil on the shoulder. She took a deep breath and lowered the hand slowly as if fighting against herself.

"You would enjoy a place like that more than I would and we both know that, idiot!" She retorted. The comment caused Gilbert to gasp, lowering the phone as he looked at Liz. His mouth open in an offended expression.

"Yeah? Well...Well at least I'm not cynical and boring!" Gilbert shouted back, drawing attention from passing groups of fellow college students looking for a way to pass the time.

They continued arguing for a solid twenty minutes. Liz would call Gilbert some name and Gilbert would retort saying how much worse she is and threatening to kick her ass. At that time, Liz would bring up a memory of when she effectively kicked his ass and threaten to do it again. Then Gil would call her a name and the cycle would start again. I sighed, checking the watch I still didn't have for the time I still didn't know.

"I'm just going to walk home guys, this was a bust." I said. Elizabeta and Gilbert didn't seem to notice the announcement over the shouting though, leaving me to feel very uncomfortable as I slowly slipped away and began walking down the sidewalk.

A rumble shook my midsection as my stomach shouted for food. With a sigh, I patted the tired tummy and looked around the street for a place to calm my hunger. Blue eyes winked at me from the sign sitting above the bar from earlier. I picked up my pace, feeling the woman's eyes following me from over her ample breasts. I didn't slow until the skimpy bikini was far behind me. The sound of old sneakers being the only sound on the deserted street.

The sun remained in its perch, shining down with annoying brightness. I could feel each ray connecting with my skin and hear the clock ticking down to the moment that the comfortable tan would turn into an angry burn. Gilbert and Liz's shouts had long turned into a silence, something I was grateful for.

I'd never heard two people fight so much in my entire life and I've spent the past two weeks with nations who kept grudges for centuries. But now the _____ show had begun again. This week's episode is a doozy: ____ is hungry and there's nowhere good to eat.
