Chapter Twenty-One
A Vision of What Could Be
Summer first noticed the wind.
A tickle against her skin while her vision remains black. The soft streams of air cooled her skin and carried the scent of Earth. Of freshly cut grass on a warm day. The scent calmed her, relaxing her tense nerves though she couldn't see. It reminded her that everything was okay. As long as the breeze ruffled her dress and the sun warmed her skin, Summer would know everything is okay.
"Hey, Summer, what are you standing around with your eyes closed for?" A voice shattered her silence. Eyes closed? Summer didn't have her eyes closed. Right?
Muscles tensed then relaxed as Summer's eyelids peeled open. In one indescribable instant, the world was revealed in a burst of color. A sky full of the purest blue. Grass so green it hurt to look at the ground. And the prettiest flowers Summer had ever seen. Splotches of rainbow ran across the fields like a paint bomb that exploded and covered the hills in life. Summer could even see her own feet! Red polish winked up at her from between the blades of grass.
"You coming or are you just going to stare at the ground?" The voice again interrupted Summer's discoveries with an annoying question. She looked up, wanting to get rid of the person and return to her flowers.
The cloud on the boys head drew her attention. Wisps of pure white protruding from a central clump. How had he gotten a cloud out of the sky? Summer had tried before to get a cloud on the ground and it did not work. Though, this boy's entire body looked like a cloud so maybe he wasn't a boy at all? A beige vest covered hs chest, fur texture seeming to be from an animal. In contrast, his pants were a dark brown color with millions of stitches crossing back and forth to create a rough material with holes poking through to reveal skin. A large smile pulled his lips upward and pinched his cheeks. It seemed like a genuine gesture but the smile never reached his eyes.
Wait. Summer knew someone with that smile. The kind which held more lies than truths. No one smiles that easily without having something to hide behind it.
"What do you want, Winter?" She asked, allowing the momentary confusion fall away. Out of all the seasons, Winter was the least dangerous. He was simply a ball of emotional issues and messy hair. Probably an unnatural crush on Autumn too. Winter laughed as if he head Summer's thoughts.
"I need you, dummy! Spring had the thing planned, remember?" Winter asked. Slowly, Summer shook her head. She did not remember the 'thing'. Winter sighed, smile never leaving his face.
"You're such a scatterbrain." Wintered waved Summer forward, "Come on then, I guess you'll see it once we get there." With that, Winter turned around and began walking towards the line of trees. Summer rushed to follow but a thought bubble in the back of her mind as the grass grazed the soles of her feet.
Those trees... They weren't there before.
Summer pushed the thought aside and picked up the pace, closing the distance between her and Winter. The grass thinned out as she moved into the woods, giving way to dirt. The earth felt cool and soft. Summer liked the feeling. She watched the dirt sink with her steps, imprints of her feet left a trail of their path. It felt as if she were walking upon nothing at all, floating amongst the plant life as she followed Winter to an unknown destination.
In contrast, the leaves and branches above Summer's head we're extremely solid. Tangling twines of brown and green stretched endlessly, blocking out the gorgeous blue sky. Though, there were slivers of sun that broke through, warming her face and reassuring Summer with its presence. She trusted the sun. The sun never lied, just gave warmth to all beneath it. The others should be more like the sun sometimes.
