We woke the next morning to find some very disturbing news. Something that was unavoidable and horrifying.
And unfortunately, Mother hadn't returned yet. We had to deal with this by ourselves...
"A tournament?!" Not a read the announcement over my shoulder. "'Next full moon, the following dragons have been selected for the honor of representing Sulona in the tournament to end this war.'"
"Rutil... Hakuir... Wolip..." I paused, wincing. "Nota... Kintes... and Zepth..."
"So this is how I am to die." Nota looked down. "While the crowd goes crazy."
"Don't say that, Nota. The other dragons we'll be up against may be in similar situations. We have a chance." I rested a paw on her shoulder, but we both knew our chances were slim.
"She wants us dead, Zepth." She looked up, grimly. "She threw us in the tournament to publicly execute us."
I thought for a moment. "Then, wouldn't you rather go down fighting?"
It was a great insult if a dragon was called a coward, and our entire species avoided that reputation over death. If we were to die, I shall go out fighting until I cannot fight anymore.
"We're gonna need a lot more training." Nota grinned.
"You aren't limited to your claws and spikes, hatchlings." Grilop lectured as Nota and I stood in the grass, determined. "You have abilities that are unique, use them."
We broke off, and I walked to a lone tree stump in the clearing. I shut my eyes, concentrating. I searched within myself to find something... anything I could use to defend myself with. I peeked an eye open and watched Nota effortlessly blast molten metal from her throat yet again. I haven't the slightest clue to what an Light Dragon's special powers could be, or a Darkness Dragon for that matter. I was horribly lost.
"There's something special inside of you, Zepth." Grilop told me, as if reading my thoughts. Maybe he simply saw me struggling so bad that he needed to step in. Regardless, it lowered my confidence. "It's not going to be easy to find, you have to search for it. You have to feel the elements flowing through you. You have to focus that power, and let it out."
I shut my eyes again, calmer this time. I did feel something inside me. Was it electricity? Was it adrenaline? All I know is that is was screaming, like they pounding blood in my ears. It wanted out.
I stopped thinking, focusing only on this power from within me. Subconsciously, I braced my back leg and opened my mouth. The world seemed to slow, and all that mattered was how suddenly powerful I felt. Time didn't flow unless I allowed it to. The wind didn't blow unless I permitted it.
I opened my mouth, and exhaled pure energy.
The tree stump was now burnt beyond recognition, charred through and through. I opened my eyes, repeating my actions.
Beautifully dark fire blasted from my very spirit and out my throat. I forced myself to use the lighter side of myself, and the black fire transformed into golden flames.
I had done it.
I could now use my elements in battle.
