"No..." I whispered, horrified at what the Queen had done. It was a cruelty beyond my imagination.
"What if we refuse?" Nota challenged, causing the audience to silence, facing the Queen for her reaction to this outrageous question,
"Hm." She grinned, her flawless canines catching the sun. "Then you both shall be executed."
"So either one of us survives..." Nota thought out loud looking sadly towards me. "Or none of us do."
"Nota, you have to promise you'll take care of Deltul for me. I'm the one she truly wants dead. You have a chance to escape the kingdom and be free." I quietly told her. "Just make it quick."
"No!" She cried, shoving me away. "He's your denmate. I have no one left. You are the one who has to win.
"I can't-!"
"You have to." Nota looked down. "The Queen wants a show, I'll make it easy for you."
Before I could understand what she was doing, Nota screamed ferociously and charged, horns out. I jumped out of the way in a moment of pure instinct, sending her crashing into the wall.
She quickly got back up and faced me once more, before leaping in the air and pinning me down. Her primal snarls caused me to involuntarily want to defend myself. Nota snapped down with her teeth, and I slammed my paw into her jaw. Using her moment of imbalance, I threw her off and rolled to the side.
"Don't do this!" I begged, but Nota wasn't listening. She charged again, and I shoved her over. She lashed out in a frenzy, with no particular motive but to scare me into slaying her. I slammed her shoulders on the ground to snap her out of it, before hissing "I have a plan!"
"So do I." She growled through her gritted teeth. "Finish it quickly."
I unsheathed my talons, and scraped her chest enough to cause blood to ooze out. I wouldn't kill her, not when there was a chance we could both make it out alive.
I dramatically raised my claws in the air, before bringing it down on Nota's chest hard. She twitched and howled in pain, before falling limply under my grasp, dead.
That's what the audience saw...
In reality, I sheathed my talons before contacting Nota, punching her instead. She got my plan, howling and writhing in "pain". Then, she collapsed and stopped breathing.
The audience gasped at Nota dramatic end, muttering amongst themselves as if it were the gossip of the land. One dragon stood from his seat and pointed a finger accusingly at Queen Hyla. "She turned them against each other!"
The crowd grew in volume, agreeing with them. A riot was seconds away from forming, when the Queen stretched her large wings and demanded their attention.
"Silence!" Her voice roared, quieting them. She looked to one of the guards beside her and instructed "Dispose of the body and prepare the arena for its final battle."
"Final battle?" I stepped back, uneasiness growing in the pit of my stomach. Something was very wrong. "Against whom?"
"Toss the body into the Forest of Whum for all I care!" Queen Hyla continued to her guards, before coming to her feet. She looked over the frightened audience, before addressing them.
How could I be so stupid?! Even if I won the tournament, Queen Hyla wouldn't let me simply walk out and be free. She had to kill me.
"It is I who shall fight this young champion." She announced with a sinister grin, eyes locked on to me.
And she was about to kill me, with her own talons.
