I entered into his office. There were loose strands of Christmas lights, running from one end of the room to the other. I extended the sleeves of my red knitted woolen sweater, to probably cover my fingers, as they froze. I could feel it.
I looked around, adjusting my eyes, to the new setting I found myself in, before being told to sit. He was busy, behind his chair. I noticed he brought out a file or two, and returned some back in. I looked back at him. He was tall, and the remains of his youthful well built body, could still be seen evidently. He turned back to attend to me, dropping a magazine in the table that separated us both.
"I'm sure you must be wondering, how I was able to identify you?"
I hadn't thought about that, till then but I replied in the affirmative, however, by just a brief nod.
"I had a lot of applicants, for the same role of this organisation's reporter, but I'll like you, to have the job."
"But what have I done, to merit such kindness from you?"
"It's about what you will do, Love." He said supporting himself on his desk, before adding. "You know this girl?" He added, moving the magazine, a bit closer for proper view.
It was the same magazine that Edward read, it had Tess on the front cover. The subject always goes back to Tess doesn't it?
"Yes."
"It means you must have heard, about her kidnap."
I nodded once again, before he proceeded.
"Sources reveal that you too, were once upon a time best friends?"
How did the sources, know that?
"We were...are," I managed to correct. If he was considering giving me the job, I had better not blown things up, by admitting we haven't quite been the best of friends, lately.
"Well then, I see no better person to take up the job on writing a report, than you. Impress me before tomorrow, and you get to stay. Understood?"
"Yes, thank you so much," I mustered every breath in me, to say.
He invited someone over, and turning around, I watched the majestic strider, walk across the room. Each step, drawing him a significant distance closer. He however, after a brief handshake, fell back unto the leather seat, releasing a soft squeak.
I couldn't seem to get my eyes, off the young man. He appeared so familiar, I was sure I knew him from somewhere. Not just sure where.
"Maya, meet Leone Stewart. He is a detective. Leone, Maya, The new recruit. You two, will work together."
I'm to work with a detective?, How comforting!
