"Oh my god, they are totally going to get married, and I better be invited." I laughed as my best friend, Ivy talked about my mom and Eric.
"Don't worry, you'll be the first we invite," I said to her.
"Who's getting married?" Sam asked as he sat down at our table with a tray with pizza.
"Her mom and Eric," Ivy said to him.
"You don't know that for sure." He said then turned to me. "They've only been going out for what, two weeks." I nodded.
Yup, ever since that night, they've gone out on a date almost every night for two weeks. I've never seen my mom so happy before. Seeing her this happy made me so happy.
"I've never seen my mom this happy since the day I won 1st place in the swimming tournament when I was 10, which wasn't even a big deal," I said.
"It was to her," Ivy said.
We continued talking about random stuff before the bell rang to go to our next class. I had English, my favorite, so I headed upstairs. I walked in and sat in the front by the window. The only time I was ever a nerd, was in English. I loved to read and write, so this was my favorite class.
As soon as the bell rang, our teacher stood up and clapped his hands.
"Okay, students, welcome back to class. Today you are going to start your projects. It's going to be on a topic, any topic you want. It will be due in one month, so I expect you to put a lot of time and effort into this. It can be anything you want. An essay, a story, anything, but it has to have some kind of message." A few people groaned, but I smiled. I loved writing these kinds of things, where we were able to write anything that our mind was set on. "Now, today we are going to start brainstorming some topics that you could use..." For the rest of the class, we talked about topics.
Before I knew it, I was walking through the door to my home. "Mom, I'm home!"
"In my room!" I ran upstairs dropping my bag in my room before going into hers. She was standing in front of a mirror with a red dress on that went down to her knees.
"Another date tonight?" I asked sitting on her bed.
"Yup, Eric is taking me dancing." She said.
"Awesome."
She turned around and looked at me and then frowned. "I'm sorry, if you don't want me to go, then I won't." She said walking to me.
"No, of course, I want you to go, it's just, you guys have gone out pretty much every night and I miss hanging out with just you."
She sighed. "I'm sorry, bumblebee. How 'bout tomorrow night we have just a girls night. We can order pizza, watch movies, and play board games."
"You sure? I thought you two were going bowling?"
"I'll cancel. You're more important to me than a date." She smiled sitting next to me. I smiled leaning my head on her shoulder.
"Okay." I simply said.
"You really like him, don't you?"
I felt her smile. "He definitely is something." We laughed. "But, he seems like a great guy."
I looked up at her. "He really likes you, mom. You have no idea how much he compliments you behind your back. He's always blushing when you come into the room, which I always make fun of him for. I think he's perfect for you."
She looks at me in silence. "You're perfect for me." I smiled. "No matter who comes into our lives. You'll still be the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me."
"I love you, mom."
"I love you, too, bumblebee."
We sat there in silence as I laid my head on her shoulder.
"Mom, can I ask you something?" She nodded. "Why do you think dad didn't want us?"
She sat there in silence and sighed. "I think he just wasn't ready for something as amazing as you."
"But, you weren't either. You were sixteen, you weren't ready."
She slightly nodded. "Yes, but it's different for moms. I carried you for nine months. Your father wasn't attached to you. He was the star football player, had a scholarship to college, and had a lot on the line. He had a lot of people looking up to him, and he didn't want to risk losing that. Baby, I knew deep down he wanted you, but he just wasn't ready to let that go."
"But, you were?"
"How could I not with an angel like you."
I smiled and hugged her. "Okay, you need to go to your date."
"Okay. I made spaghetti and put a plate in the microwave for you, the rest is in the fridge." She said. I nodded and headed to my room to start my homework.
After about two hours of homework, I looked at the clock. It was almost 8:30. I heard my belly growl, so I headed down to the kitchen to eat the spaghetti. I looked out the kitchen window to see it was pouring. I heated it up in the microwave and then sat at the island watching YouTube as I ate.
Just as I finished washing my dishes the doorbell rang. Who could that be? Did mom forget her house key or something? I dried my hands and went to the door. I looked through the peephole to see two cops. What's going on?
I slowly unlocked the door and opened it. The two cops look at me and gave me a soft smile. "Hello, are you Willow Hale?" The taller cop asked. I nodded. "I'm Officer Sanders and this is my partner Officer Ryan. May we come in?" I slowly opened the door wider, so they could step in.
"What's going on?" I asked as we sat in the living room. Me in an armchair and they sat on the couch.
Officer Sanders sighed sadly. "I'm sorry, Ms. Hale, but there was an accident... There was a driver who was intoxicated and..." No "Your mother and Eric Martelli were hit."
I sat there frozen. "Are they okay?"
By the sigh that came from Officer Sanders, I knew the answer. I felt my eyes become clouded over by tears, but I tried to fight them. "I'm so sorry, Ms. Hale, but your mother didn't make it." I couldn't control it as the tears fell, but I still sat still.
"What about Eric?" I quietly asked.
"He was injured pretty bad, but he survived. He was induced into a coma." I nodded. "Um, we need you to identify the body, miss."
"Okay." It came out as a whisper.
"You can come in tomorrow at ten if that works for you?" I nodded.
"I'm very sorry." Was the last thing they said before they left.
I don't know how long I sat there before I slowly walked up the steps and went into my mom's room. I looked around the room the best I could with my blurry eyes. I saw her blue long sleeve blouse lying on her bed. I walked over to it picking it up. I laid on the bed and brought it to my face and breathed in. Before I knew it I was sobbing myself to sleep.
