Chapter 30 A Final Moment
Some point after Jonathan had found out Nate was really his son Evan he had asked him if he wanted to play Hockey. It didn't take long for Evan to agree to it. He had a lot of pent up anger because of his life so he wanted to take it out on the ice. So the first day Hockey tryouts were happening Evan took the opportunity to go. He was a bit rusty at first since he hasn't been on the ice since he was younger but once he started to skate he could feel his instincts kick in.
He was fast and learned basic techniques quickly. He smiled happily as the cold air bit on his nose as he watched other people on the ice. Jonathan and Nathan were on the side along with several other parents who came to watch their children try out as well. Evan made it on the team which shocked him but he was excited none the less.
Their season was apparently one of their bests too. They won 43 out of the 59 games they played. Even then they tied for 7 of them and then lost 9. They won their playoffs too. Their team the Northern Owls apparently didn't have a good year til he had arrived. So he'd like to think that he was the missing piece that was needed. Of course they had developed a rival team in the Northern Bears, who were the best team in the league.
The two games they had played they both had won a game and lost a game. It wasn't a doubt that their last and final game would be the finals. He was a bit nervous as all his friends and family would be there. Jonathan and Nathan would come to all the games but this is going to be the first time all his friends would be there. They couldn't come to most games because of preparation of going to college.
Evan himself has a scholarship going for him as well but he would find a school that would have both hockey and music. They're all aiming to go to the same school so there's one school he's hoping that would scout him. Tyler has a football scholarship to the same school while the others are paying in full. Of course if Evan doesn't get it he'll still go to the school, if his acceptance letter gets in.
He's wearing his uniform and his skates are fastened on. He's the first one on the ice testing to see how his balance is. He could hear the murmurs of the crowd as the building slowly filling up with parents and excited fans. He spotted his family and waved at them. They cheered loudly for him making him swiftly skate towards his team.
"Alright this is the game you want to do your best," his coach said when Evan has arrived.
"There are scouts out there and they're looking for the best of the best. I know our past seasons we didn't do so well but this year will be our year," he said getting everybody excited.
Evan has gotten front position like most of the time. There were occasions he played defensive but they were slim to none. He enjoyed being forward as it gave him more opportunity to show off. After another saying the team got into their positions as did the other team. With a sound of a buzzer Evan zoomed forward to hit the puck. He felt the adrenaline kick in as players tried to check him.
Two periods had passed and they were down to the last 5 minutes of the last period. They were both currently tied 2-2 and Evan could feel the sweat rubbing down his neck. He was the only one who had stayed all three as the the left and right wing had gotten hurt and was replaced. Evan's eyes never left the puck as he skate forwards with his stick to hit it.
Everything became a blur around him with only the goalie in place. He took a deep breath and shot the puck forward. He watched as the goalie got down to block it but he was too late. The puck soared passed him and made it into the net. The horn sounded as the time ran out at the last second. The crowd cheered and his team surrounded him.
"Excellent shot Fong," his coach said patting him on the back.
The news of his amazing shot made it to the papers in two days and Jonathan decided that they would go out to eat again. Of course the news gets around pretty quickly and a pile of newspaper were on a front porch. The door opened to reveal a woman as she grabbed the top paper. She nearly dropped it in shock as she read the news about Evan's shot.
"Evan," she softly said clutching the paper to her chest.
