Chapter 1: Malia
The next morning, I know I have to tell Ryder. I have to tell Kaiden. I have to prepare to meet the monster I must call my true mate. I feel repulsed, to even be the soulmate of that... That... Hybrid.
I walk out of the bedroom, dressed in a plain red tank top and black jeans. Ryder sits on the couch, with our son and I can't help but smile, feeling at ease and forgetting the impending doom that awaits me all too soon. But, I snap out of my oasis and walk up to Ryder, with a serious expression.
"Aiden," I coo to my son, who looks up at me with his big brown eyes. I smile lovingly at him. "Mommy has to borrow daddy for a bit, okay?" Eyeing Ryder, he immediately gets up, sensing the urgency in my tone.
"Okay, mommy," Aiden says, then looks back at the TV which is playing a re-run of Spongebob. I gesture Ryder to follow me and I guide him back to our room.
"What's up?" Ryder asks, as I close the door behind us.
Okay, this is it. I gotta tell him. I walk past Ryder and go towards my nightstand. I take out the letter, handing it to Ryder. He gives me a confused look, as he opens the envelope and takes out the folded paper. When he opens it, his eyes scan over the paper. At first, he looks at me like I'm crazy, for thinking the drawing was anything but harmless, but his eyes go back to the paper and they darken.
"This is..."
"Yup," I nod.
Ryder growls, grumbling the paper in his hand, staring at the ground. "This mother-..."
"Hey," I interrupt, pointing towards the door. Aiden has a thing for eavesdropping and I swear, I know he's there every time.
"When is he back?" Ryder whisper slowly and I shake my head, shrugging.
"I-I don't know... But, oh, Ryder... I think he got into my head last night," I whimper, remembering that horrible dream, where he had threatened our son.
Ryder pulls me into his chest and lets his chin rest on my head, as he rubs my back soothingly. "Shh," he cooed, as I let out another whimper.
"H-He threatened our son, Ry..." I say, my bottom lip quivering.
"Hey," Ryder pulls away from me and placed both hands on my shoulders. "A 24 hour watch on Aiden, do you think that will help ease your worries?" I nodded, extremely happy to oblige to that. Ryder smiles kindly at me and kisses my forehead.
"I love you," I told him, with a tight smile. He smiled kindly, pinching my cheek, making me smile bigger, more relaxed.
"I love you too. Now, let's go and gather the pack. Aiden can stay at home, I imagine you don't want him knowing." I nod and he gives an understanding smile, before putting a hand on the small of my back, leading me into the living room, where Aiden was sitting, looking at us.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" He asks, in that tone he uses when he pretends he didn't hear us. I just smile at him.
"Stay in this house, okay baby? Mommy and daddy will be back."
Aiden nods and Ryder and I walk out hand in hand to gather the pack.
--
"Everyone," I started, my voice loud and full of authority. I have gotten much respect from my pack since I became their new Alpha. Every time I walked into the room, they would smile and greet me.
They all looked at me expectantly, as the chatter died down. All eyes were on me, something I have grown acustom to over the years. "I have a job for all of you. A 24 hour watch on my son, Aiden. You all know him." They nod, but all of their expressions go to one that looks like confusion. "It is for his safety. I have recieved a threat, not too long ago on my son. Do not let this be known to him, he must be oblivious."
Whispers fell over the pack and my eyes met Kaiden's. He seemed peeved, by the news I have just given everyone. His jaw was clenched and his usual innocent eyes, had a fire I had only seen, the day we all found out he had killed my brother.
"I need two people for a morning, afternoon and night shift," I say. "The rest of you, just keep your ears and eyes on the lookout." I wait for a moment, seeing their confirming looks. "That is all."
With that, I had dismissed them. I started to walk away, with Ryder by my side.
"Ryder, I don't know what else to do," I whispered, my voice wavering slightly. "What if someone slips up and Aiden is taken? What if Aiden is taken when no one is paying attention? What if--" Ryder stops me, pulling me into a hug. He smooths my hair, as a form of comfort. I close my eyes, trying to not think of anything but my mate holding me.
"Baby," he said kindly, as he pulled away from me. "Aiden will be fine. I'll be damned if I let anything happen to our son. Calm down, okay? He'll be fine."
I take a deep breath, nodding, trying to look at the bright side of things. There will be someone watching out for Aiden morning, afternoon and night. He'll be fine. He will. I smile at Ryder as reassurance that I was fine now and he smiles back.
"Malia!" I turn around and see Kaiden and Scarlett running towards us. "We want the morning shift," Scarlett said. "I'll be damned if someone takes my godson under my watch."
I smile. "Okay. Now we just need afternoon and night shifts."
"You and I can take afternoon shifts," Ryder said, putting an arm around me. I sigh and nod, smiling.
"Okay. Night shift people?"
"Can we?" Two others come up, and I take notice of one, being Scarlett's mate, Jarrod. The other is Warren, one of Kaiden's friends.
I feel my heart lift. My pack was willing to keep my son safe. I swear, I loved them all.
"There. See? Nothing to worry about, okay, Sweetheart?" Ryder says, rubbing my back slowly. I smile.
"Thank you so much everyone."
--
When night came, Jarrod and Warren had been well rested for their shift. They stood in front of Aiden's room, as I walked in to his room.
"Hey, baby," I coo and my son smiles brightly.
"Hi, mommy."
"You go to sleep now, okay?" I say as I tuck him in. He nods and closes his eyes. I kiss the top of his head before standing up. "I love you, Aiden."
"Love you too, Mommy."
--
"Thanks for watching him tonight," I thank Jarrod and Warren and they smile.
"Hey, no worries. He's in good hands," Warren reassures. I nod and wish them a good night.
I walk into my room, where Ryder is sitting on the bed. He smiles when I walk in. I crawl into the bed, laying my head on his chest. Ryder wraps his arms around me and immediately, I feel safe.
"I love you, Lia-Love," he mutters into my hair. I'm drifting off into sleep as I reply.
"I love you too, Ry-Love."
--
"Oh. You think a 24 hour watch is gonna stop me?" Icy blue eyes pierce into my dreams, a toothy, mischievous grin following.
"I'll never let you close enough to touch him," I growl.
"Oh, Sweetness... You don't need to. I'll be there soon enough," Dimitri chuckled. The chuckle slowly turns into a cackle, one you'd hear in a movie from the villain.
The dream fades off, with Dimitri's face giving me a playful glare.
