Chapter 7: Malia
The day of Kaiden's birthday, I was stumped. I didn't know what to give him. Currently, I was sitting in Aiden's room with him, watching him play his games on his xbox. Minecraft seemed to be his favorite at the moment.
He shifted before his time to shift. I don't know if that's ever been done, but I'm extremely worried about it. What's it supposed to mean? I got closer to Aiden, running my hands through his hair lovingly. He leaned back into my stomach continuing to play, as I turned my head towards the window, where I could clearly see Ryder, talking to the pack's doctor, Evangeline. They were walking towards the house, getting ready to come inside. I turned back to my son, smiling as I leaned down to place a sweet kiss on his head, before caressing his forehead, soothingly. He pauses his game, sets down his controller and looks up at me.
"Mommy, is something gonna happen to me?" He asks, innocently.
I shook my head and hugged him tight. "Nothing, Baby. Absolutely nothing. You're going to be fine," I cooed. He smiled at me before the door opened. I turned to see Ryder and Evangeline standing there. Ryder nods his head towards him and her and I get up, telling my son I'd be back soon. I looked at the two gravely before I walked out with them.
--
We stood outside, Ryder hugging my side as Evangeline took a deep breath.
"So, Aiden's shift was unexpected and before his time. Do you realize the risks of this?" I shake my head, feeling my heart squeeze. How serious is this? Evangeline pursed her lips. "Aiden might... Not live to see his 21st birthday. His shift came prematurely, which means extreme danger to his life. Alpha, I'm so sorry..."
I felt like I was choking. I felt like I was drowning. I couldn't breathe. I lose my brother and now my son. Ryder squeezes me and then pulls me close, as I start sobbing into his chest. My heart hurts...
"How long?" Ryder asks, his voice cracking slightly. I wrap my arms around him and brought him closer to me.
Evangeline sucks in a breath, as if she's contemplating. "He's 5 right now, so I'd say... He has 15 years."
I heard enough. "You're dismissed," I spat. I'm not angry at her, though. I'm angry at myself.
Evangeline nods, bowing her head. "Excuse me," she says as she leaves.
I push away from Ryder and look into his eyes. Rimmed with tears, just like mine. "We can't let Aiden know," he whispered and I nodded.
"He'd be freaked out..." I muttered and Ryder grunted in agreement. He sighed and put on a smile.
"We need to get Kaiden's party worked out. We need to make sure he stays away from the pack house," he said and I smiled.
"Yes, but I still haven't gotten him a present." Ryder kissed the top of my head. "You'll think of something, Baby."
"Allow me to be of assistance," a pristine, regal voice sounded and I turned my head to see a petite, but tall girl standing in front of me. She wore a black cloak. "Paola," she said as she lifted a tiny hand towards me. I rose my eyebrow and slowly took her hand in mine and shook it. Well, this is weird. Who is she?
"Malia," I said stiffly. "What do you want?"
Paola smiled brightly. "Why, to help you with Kaiden's birthday present of course. And I believe this one would be the best," she said. I looked towards Ryder and he gave Paola a wary look.
"I'm gonna go keep Kaiden occupied," he muttered, giving me another kiss and leaving me with the woman. I just stared at her for a moment.
"What do you want?" I repeated.
