Sonic was eating a burnt slice of toast from that morning. He looked at the CCPs and Jocks' table. Shadow was buying his lunch from the lunch lady, Ms. Medusa. He gave her a small box as she gave him a chocolate bar. She opened the box and shrieked. She put on a golden snake necklace.

"Thank you, Shadow," she said, "I love the ruby eyes." The snakes that formed her hair hissed in agreement as they looked at the necklace of their glory. Shadow faked a smile and sat down with the CCPs and Jocks. They were all  making jokes and laughing.

"Hey Shadow," a girl named McKenzie Hollister said, "Have you heard about the prom that's coming up?"

"Yea," Shadow replied, uninterested. He wasn't really the kinda guy who would randomly show up at a prom and mess up a bunch of girls for no reason.

"Are you going?" a fat vixen named Samantha asked and then snapped, "EAT YOUR SALAD!"

"Yeah, I guess I'll go this year, and yeah Samantha, I'm eating my salad. Are you going?"

"Yeah," a girl named Milan Ramada said, "We're all going with dates. Mine's gonna be James. Samantha's gonna try to get Tails to go with her, and McKenzie's hoping to go with Brandon."

James laughed kinda shyly and then said, "You guys wanna see something funny?" Everyone nodded. James went to Sonic and said, "Hey bro!" Sonic looked up at him. "I got a surprise for you!" Sonic was suspicious but slightly leaned over the counter anyway. As he did, James punched him in the face. Sonic fell back and landed on his butt. The CCPs and Jocks were laughing, all of them except Shadow. Sonic rubbed his nose and stood up.

"Oh my God!" James cried, "I'm so sorry!" Sonic tried to hold back the growl of anger that wanted to come out. James leaned close to Sonic and asked, "Did you hear about the prom that's coming up?"

"Yes, I have," Sonic replied.

"Do you wanna go with a date for a change? Y'know, not be a slave for once in your life?" James continued. Sonic's eyes widened and he felt a form of hope envelope his heart.

"Yes!" Sonic replied, unable to contain his hope. James gained a devilish grin. Shadow saw it and knew that James was about to do something to tear the slave down.

"Well too bad!" James snapped, causing Sonic to slightly recoil, "Nobody would even dare to go with you and do you know why?" Sonic kept his mouth shut as James continued, "You are a dirty, useless, and worthless slave. You are nothing but a piece of property." Sonic's heart shattered as James walked away, back to the table where all the CCPs and Jocks were laughing. The only one who remained silent was Shadow. He watched as tears filled Sonic's eyes. Sonic took one look at the silent red and black hedgehog before he bolted out of the cafeteria and up to the attic room where he threw himself on his rock solid bed and let his tears flow like a river.

Shadow felt a weird pang of guilt in his heart. He watched as his friends laughed. He got up from the table.

"Hey, guys," he said to his friends. "I'm gonna go get a drink, okay?" They all nodded and Shadow casually walked out of the cafeteria. As soon as he was certain that no one was watching, he ran to the attic room as fast as he could. He cracked the door open a bit and peeked inside to see Sonic lying on one of the beds lined against the walls, crying hysterically. Shadow walked into the room and quietly shut the door behind him, but it wasn't silent enough. The sound of crying suddenly stopped and Sonic's ears had flipped back toward the door. Shadow remained at the door as the blue slave slowly lifted his head and turned his gaze. It felt like an eternity before Sonic's eyes beheld Shadow. And as they did, the blue hedgehog's gaze immediately darkened.

"What do you want?" Sonic growled. Shadow just came to Sonic and sat down beside him.

"Are you okay?"

Sonic looked away.

"I'm sorry about what James did to you."

Sonic turned and replied, "Why are you apologizing? You didn't do it."

"I'm apologizing because I know he won't and I truly feel bad about what he did to you."

Sonic shifted a little. His gaze softened a bit and he asked, "Why are you here?"

"I felt guilty," Shadow admitted. He paused for a second and then said, "Do you wanna hang out after school today?"

"Why?"

"Because I want to make a new friend."

Sonic snorted and looked away again. "Yeah right. Like anyone would want to be friends with me."

Shadow turned Sonic's face to meet his eyes.

"When I say I want something, I usually get it." Sonic smiled a little at that.

"Alright. When I'm done with my chores, I'll meet you at the dark corridor, okay?" Sonic gave in.

"Deal!" Shadow said. He hugged Sonic and turned to leave. He then realized he didn't know Sonic's name. "By the way, what's your name?"

Sonic was confused. He pointed to himself and asked, "I'm sorry. Are you talking to me?" Shadow nodded. "Oh," Sonic replied embarrassed, "My name is Sonic. And don't tell me your name. I already know who you are Shadow the Hedgehog."

Shadow smiled and left the attic. Before entering the cafeteria, he bought a soda.

"Sorry," he told his friends, "The freaking machine wouldn't give me my drink." His friends snickered a little, but they didn't mind. As Shadow sat down, the bell rang. He groaned, a little frustrated that he didn't get to relax a bit, but he gathered his things and went to class, excited that soon, he would have a new friend to hang out with.
