Shadow started to take being Sonic's boyfriend more than seriously. He protected Sonic's life the best he could by making sure absolutely no one found out about their relationship. Most of their time was now spent in the meadow behind the school or in the town on the weekends. Sonic enjoyed the time the two of them spent together, although he was unaware that Shadow began to get paranoid. Sonic was sitting on Shadow's bed one afternoon when Shadow pinned him down.
"Shadow...?" Sonic asked, "What are you doing?"
Shadow did not reply and leaned down, licking Sonic's belly. Sonic twitched from the unexpected attention.
"Shadow!" Sonic repeated, "What are you doing?"
"I..." Shadow didn't know why he had licked Sonic like that. "I don't exactly know..." Sonic just continued to stare at Shadow.
"I think I know why."
"What?" Shadow's ears perked up at the sudden sentence. "You do?"
"I think you want me." Shadow cocked his head slightly.
"In what way?"
"Sex."
Shadow's eyes went wide and he blushed very deeply. He opened his mouth to explain, but Sonic pressed his fingers to Shadow's lips.
"It's okay. I've thought about it too..."
"I was too scared to say it though. I didn't think you'd be ready."
Sonic looked away a little.
"What makes you think that I wouldn't be ready after all these years..."
"Sonic, what do you mean?"
Sonic blinked and looked at Shadow.
"Mean by what?" he asked innocently. Shadow cocked his head a bit.
"You just said, 'What makes you think that I wouldn't be ready after all these years...' What do you mean by that?" Sonic blinked.
"I don't remember saying that. Are you sure you're not hearing things?"
Shadow gave up.
"Never mind."
He plopped himself down next to Sonic and wrapped his arm around him. Sonic purred as Shadow did so. "I love you." Sonic turned halfway to face Shadow. He Eskimo kissed him and then rolled over again. Shadow gently traced Sonic's back with his fingers. Sonic would stiffen every now and then, but Shadow took no notice of it, letting his hand slip over Sonic's shoulder and to his pecs. Sonic purred as Shadow moved to rub his ears. He then pulled Sonic close and refused to let him go.
"I love you Shadow."
"I love you more Sonic."

Shadow woke up to hear a ukulele playing. He looked over to see Sonic sitting in the blue velvet chair beside the window. Shadow sat up and got off the bed. Sonic's ear twitched, causing him to look up.
"Hi Shadow," Sonic said.
"What are you doing?" Shadow asked as he curiously approached Sonic.
"Hm? Oh. I'm tuning this ukulele I found shoved in your closet. You should really learn to take better care of your instruments."
Shadow continued to watch and asked, "Why are you tuning it?" Sonic just smiled and replied, "I have a surprise for you. But you'll have to wait a few minutes. While you wait, get me something to eat will ya?" Shadow giggled as he left the room. Sonic was always hungry. It wasn't that uncommon for the salves. They only ate when they could find time. Sonic never really had that kind of time, and he would get punished if he took anything from the school cafeteria, so he would usually send Shadow to get him something. Shadow shortly returned with a strawberry shortcake. Sonic looked up when he heard Shadow enter the room.
"Oh God. Shadow, you shouldn't have," Sonic said.
"It's okay. I wanted to."
"No really. I go crazy when I eat chocolate."
Shadow smiled and said, "I promise, you won't go crazy. It's strawberry."
"Fine."
Sonic ate the cake and then wiped his face with his glove, leaving a dark stain on it.
"Shoot. Curse these things."
Sonic pulled his gloves off and threw then across the room.
"So what about my surprise?" Shadow asked.
"Hold on a sec. I think I'm gonna puke." Sonic waited a minute. "Nope. Okay, I'm fine now." He held the ukulele firmly in his bare hands. "Okay, now for your surprise." He started to play a tune on it and then he sang.

Shadow stared at Sonic, not believing how amazing his singing voice was.
"Di you like it?" Sonic asked, still wrapped in Shadow's arms.
"I loved it, and I love you."
As Sonic and Shadow kissed, they didn't notice the shadow watching them through the window. It slipped from sight and into the building and up the stairs of the dark corridor, that led to the belfry, planning its next move.
