Sonic quickly ran down the hallway. He had promised to meet Shadow after he had done his chores, but he was really trying to run away from the leather whip that Mr. Lemon Grab held in his hand. Sonic bolted into the dark corridor, knowing that the teacher wouldn't dare to follow him. He breathed heavily and felt a hand come down on his shoulder. Sonic made a sharp gasp and jumped around.

"Sonic, relax. It's just me," Sonic heard a familiar voice said.

"Shadow!" Sonic excitedly cried and hugged him. "Sorry I'm late."

Shadow chuckled and replied, "Ready?" Sonic nodded, releasing Shadow and unsure of why he had hugged him. Shadow took Sonic's hand and led him to the meadow behind the school. Sonic would nervously look around every once in a while, but Shadow understood. The slaves were most scared of being caught near a student. It was against to rules to hang out with them, which is why Sonic suddenly disappeared into the branches of the tree in the center of the meadow  when he heard a twig crack. Shadow laughed.

"Come down Sonic. It was just a squirrel."

"Are you sure?" Sonic asked, his tail becoming visible as he slowly climbed down the tree. "Yes, I'm sure."

"Great," Sonic growled, "Now I feel stupid." Shadow laughed as Sonic laid in his lap and stared up at the branches of the tree.

"Sonic," Shadow said, "I'm really sorry about today. It was wrong of James to do that to you." Sonic pressed a finger to Shadow's lips.

"Shut up," he playfully said, "I already told you, you don't need to apologize." Suddenly, a twig cracked. Sonic bolted into the tree branches as a blonde hedgehog came into view. Sonic's eyes focused on James and Shadow as James approached.

"Hi James," Shadow said.

Not him again!

"Hi Shads," James replied, "Have you seen Sonic around?"

"No, why?"

"One of the teachers is really ticked and needs to take their anger out on someone. But they'll probably be over it by the time I get back."

"Well, you know how they are. I haven't seen Sonic but if I do, I'll let you know, 'kay?"

"Sure. See ya Shadow Man."

"See ya Little D."

As soon as James was out of sight, Sonic came down from his hiding spot. Sonic hugged Shadow and whispered, "He scares me and hurts me so much..."

"Don't worry," Shadow said, running his fingers along Sonic's back quills, "I won't ever let him hurt you again. No one will ever hurt you again." Sonic's eyes widened. He couldn't have heard right.

"No one will ever hurt me?" Sonic repeated. Shadow nodded.

"Not while I'm around. And that's going to be for a long time."

Sonic hugged Shadow tighter.

"You're the greatest friend I've ever had."

"Come on. Let's go to my dorm."

Sonic was hesitant to follow.

"If I get caught, Shadow, you'll never see me again..." Sonic told him, holding his hand tightly.

"I promise that you won't get caught."

Sonic laid down on Shadow's bed.

"Oh my God!" he cried, "Never before have I slept on a bed so soft!" Sonic almost let the softness of the bed consume him as he sighed in pleasure. He sat up and watched as Shadow pulled on a pair of pajamas. He noticed that Sonic was staring at him.

"Would you like a pair?" he asked.

"Would I ever," Sonic said without thinking. Then, he slapped his hands over his mouth. "Oh crud! I'm sorry, I didn't mean that." Shadow laughed and said, "Don't worry. I know what it's like to be a little cold, but I can't imagine what it's like to be freezing to death each night." Sonic nodded. The attic was so cold, that the slaves would huddle together to keep warm. Sonic knew that there was truth to the name the students gave him. He was too small to produce much heat, so just like the runt in any litter of animals, he would get pushed out of the group and sleep in the corner of the room, shivering violently throughout the night. Once Shadow gave Sonic a pair of onesies, he pulled them on and pulled the hood over his head.

"How do you keep these so warm?!" he squealed. Shadow chuckled and replied, "I put them in the dryer."

Sonic cocked his head to the right in utter confusion, "What's a dri-er?"

Shadow was shocked that Sonic didn't know what a dryer was. Come to think of it, Sonic had probably never seen a dryer either.

"I'll show you tomorrow," Shadow said and pulled the covers over himself, "We should get to sleep. It's going to be an early morning."

Much too early, Sonic thought as he laid down next to Shadow and nuzzled into his fluffy chest fur.
