Sonic and Shadow spent the night in a cave as the rain poured outside. Shadow slept soundly, but Sonic couldn't sleep. He looked outside at the storm, seeing the flashing of the lightning and hearing the booming of the thunder. He looked at his belly and rubbed it.
"Don't worry little one. Daddy's here."
He looked back out at the storm. In the distance, he thought he could see Hydron wandering the forest below. He shivered and shuffled toward the back of the cave as the lightning flashed again. He looked at Shadow. How could he sleep so peacefully when they were running for their lives? Sonic pulled his knees as close as he could to his chest and put his head down, trying to hide the tears that had made their way to his eyes. He would never see his siblings or his friends again. He couldn't help but think about Tails. Tails was his best friend. He must be worried sick right now, Sonic thought, I'm sorry bro. I wish you could have come with me. You too Amy. You guys are my best friends. I miss you. Shadow shuffled in his sleep, opening one eye.
"Sonic, why are you crying?"
"I just wish that we could have brought Tails and Amy along with us. Manic and Sonia too."
Shadow sat up and hugged Sonic tight.
"You know that we couldn't Sonic. They would only slow us down."
"What about our baby Shadow? Should we leave it behind?! Will it slow us down too?!"
"Of course not, Sonic! Why would you think such a thing?"
Sonic fell into Shadow's arms and cried for a few minutes.
"I'm sorry, Shadow. It's just that I miss them and I can't stand to think that I'll never see them again." Shadow hugged Sonic tighter.
"Don't worry Sonic. You'll see them again. . . someday. Now get some rest. We'll have to leave early tomorrow." Sonic nodded and laid his head in Shadow's lap. He closed his eyes and fell asleep.

Sonic woke up the next morning to a sick feeling he was becoming familiar with.
Oh God. . .he thought, What do I do? He covered his mouth, trying to hold back what wanted to come out. He didn't want to wake Shadow just yet and he didn't want to get caught if Hydron was in the forest looking for them. Sonic finally gave up and leaned out of the cave, throwing up his guts into the forest below. The sound woke Shadow and he came to Sonic's side.
"Sonic," he said, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. It's just morning sickness."
Shadow rubbed Sonic's back until he was done, trying to comfort him. Sonic eventually moved away from the edge of the cave, and toward the back of it.
"Hey Sonic," Shadow said, "Are you hungry?"
"Yeah," Sonic replied, "But what are we gonna eat?"
