It was the next afternoon and Shadow was acting rather strange. Sonic curiously watched him as he looked over his shoulder like a banshee would appear any moment and as he nervously paced around the oak tree Sonic leaned against.
"Shadow," Sonic said his name, catching his attention, "Is something wrong?" Shadow took Sonic's hand and lead him to his dorm without saying a word. Once inside Shadow's dorm, Sonic folded his arms, leaning against the west wall with an irritated look on his face.
"What the heck has gotten into you, Shadow?!"
"Sonic," Shadow sighed, "There's a question I want to ask you."
"What?"
"You do realize that the prom is on Saturday, right?"
"Uh...yeah,"--Sonic looked away sadly-- "but I doubt anyone would ever go with me. I'm just a slave..."
Shadow lifted Sonic's chin to gaze into his eyes. "Not to me you're not." Sonic's emerald eyes widened in surprise. He couldn't believe Shadow had said such a thing.
"You're just trying to be nice..." Sonic said, not believing that Shadow truly meant what he had said. Shadow gazed into Sonic's eyes.
"I mean it. I love you..." Shadow's voice trailed off as Sonic's jaw dropped open.
"Do you realize what you're saying?! How could anyone like you ever love someone like me?! I don't believe you!" Sonic was crying. Was it true that Shadow was lying to him?
"I mean it. I love you and I want to know...will you be my date to the prom?"
Sonic couldn't contain himself and he ran away, all the way to the attic. He didn't believe Shadow. He would never be loved. But five minutes later, Sonic heard the door creak open and Shadow stood before him.
"Sonic, I don't understand, why did you run away?"
"I'm sorry, but I didn't think that what you were saying was real. It was too much for me to handle, but I think I'm okay now."
"So..." Shadow said.
"Yes," Sonic replied, "I'll be your date to the prom."
Shadow hugged Sonic tight and kissed his cheek. As he lead the way back to his dorm, his heart pounded in excitement. He finally had his date!
"Shadow," Sonic shyly said when they were back in his dorm, "I don't know how to dance."
"What?" Shadow playfully asked, "You're kidding right?"
"No I'm not. I really don't know how to dance."
"Okay, I'll teach you."
Shadow taught Sonic to dance the rest of the night, getting his toes stepped on a lot. Soon, he and Sonic were sleeping, Sonic nuzzled into his new boyfriend's chest fur.

The next morning, Shadow ran to the cafeteria and sat down with his friends.
"Hey guys!" he chimed, "I've got a date now!"
They all choked on their pancakes.
"Is she cute?" McKenzie asked. Shadow tensed.
I didn't know it had to be a girl!
"Uh, yeah," he replied. He was asked questions all morning until the bell rang. He was glad for that. He avoided his friends for the rest of the day, not wanting to talk about the prom. He had to make Sonic look like a girl...tomorrow.
