Ever since you were rescued from by angel you’d been thinking of ways to repay him. He was so cute and seemed not to get any of my references. When I mentioned being struck out he tilted his head and looked at you quizzically. “Do you not know baseball?” “What’s that?” “You’ve been watching and walking the earth for two thousand years and don’t know America’s past time?” “Uh… no.”
“Okay Cas we are going to a game.” You picked up your season tickets and made sure he was following you. Driving to the stadium he looked at it out the window. You parked, “Lets go.” Locking the car you walk all the way to the gate and Castiel still looking up and around. You take his hand so he doesn’t get lost in the crowd. Walking inside and finding your seats. “Why is everyone here?” You smile, “because we’re about to see a game.”
Seeming satisfied with that answer he looks around some more. “Do you want something to eat?” He looks to the people next to him, “I don’t eat.” “Right but to experience a game you have to try a dog.” “That sounds unpleasant. Don’t they bark when you eat them?” You giggle, “no Cas a hot dog isn’t an actual dog.” “Oh.” The music plays and the announcer introduces the teams.
You cheer for the home team as Castiel watches them take the field. “What’s the point of the places they stand?” You lean to him, “They have assigned places they play at. If you have a base you have to protect it from the opposite team.” “So what’s the ball?” “They hit it and see how many bases they can make it to without getting out first.” “I see.”
When the three strikes are done the team walks off the field. “That was confusing little game.” You grab his arm as he starts to stand, “sit down its not over.” He plops back in the seat and you can’t look at him because you’ll laugh. “When my team takes the field again then that will be the end of an inning. If your confused just watch the board.” He looks where you point and squints hard to examine the lights.
“So once the team who hits the ball get three strikes then they are out and have to sit down.” “You’re catching on.” “I am a celestial being.” You nudge his arm and take your attention back to the action below. “Oh come on ref,” you yell and Castiel nudges you. “What happened?” “One of my players was called out when he was clearly safe.” They did a replay on the big screen and Castiel saw it. “You are blind ref!” You looked over at him after he made that remark.
A foul ball was hit and it came right in your direction. You didn’t have a glove and wondered what you should do. Then the ball was stopped by Castiel’s hand. He’d caught it and got a way-to-go from the people around. He got pats on the back and even struck up a conversation with the people beside him. You heard words once in a while like his first game and it was confusing.
A few more innings down and you got up to get some refreshments. After waiting in line and finally paying for two hot dogs you make your way back to your seat. You smile when you see Castiel nodding and looking at the field. It looks like he’s talking to the man next to him and taking mental notes. You get closer and scoot past the others to sit. “This is getting fun,” Castiel says to you with an excited voice.
“Good,” you hand him a dog. “But I don’t-“ “Just eat it Cas.” He takes a bite and chews it with a scrunched up face. By the second bite he seemed to enjoy it more and even made a yummy sound. You take your eyes away from him to see what’s happening with your team. “Are you going to finish that?” You look over to see Castiel pointing to your hot dog. You smile and hand it to him, “help yourself.”
After finishing both dogs he cheers the wrong team on. “Cas! Wrong team man.” “My apologies.” Then he cheers for the right one. When your team hits a home run Castiel is the first one to jump up and cheer. When he sits back down he spots something. “Can I get one of those?” You look over to see a kid waving a foam finger in the air. “Seriously?” He gives you those puppy eyes. “Okay hang on.”
You leave your seat and make your way back to the vending area in search for a foam finger. You spot one a pay for it. When you make it back to him his eyes light up. He sticks his hand up and you slide it on. “This… makes me very happy.” He mimics the kid in waving it around. He yells for the correct team and even sings along with the song from the keyboardist. When the third strike came, from a strike out, Castiel waved that finger in giant circles. He did this until he poked the eye out of the man behind him. “I’m very sorry.” “Well when I get to see you’ll be sorry.”
You grab his arm, “come on Cas.” You duck some security guards and find two new seats to finish watching the game in. “Okay no more waving it around until after the game. Capiche?” He hangs his head, “Yea I capiche.” The last inning it was neck and neck. Tied and closing in on the last minutes of the game. With the bases loaded you clutch tightly on the idea for a grand slam. When it happens you are surprised and even more to see Castiel jump up and yell wildly.
You join him on your feet and he hugs you yelling, “WE WON! WE WON!” You laugh mostly at your new baseball loving angel and the fact that you got to share this moment with him. When the stands were thinning and you took a short cut Castiel stopped you. Pointing to a group of people, “what are they doing?” “It’s okay Cas they just want autographs.” “You can do that?” You turn and look at him, “yes… don’t tell me.” He looks down at you with those eyes again. “Those eyes should be illegal.”
You follow him over to the gate and wait for the team. The little kids up front start to get excited as men in jerseys’ walk in front of them. Castiel tries to get closer then you hear him announce, “it was my first game and you all were great!” Your hand rests at your forehead for a bit then you see him proceed to get every players autograph on his foam finger.
He smiles big when he walks back to you. Showing off his newly autographed finger you pat him on the back and walk towards the car. “So this happens more than once? So when’s the next one? What’s the playoffs?” He keeps asking questions and just as soon as you answer one he has two waiting. You don’t mind your new sports fan, just as long as he’s rooting for the right team.
Driving home he can’t stop talking about the game and comparing it to battle. How the best defense players are on the field to block the other team’s advances. He was even formulating strategies. “You should tell the coach these,” you say with a hint of sarcasm. “Can I do that?” You laugh at his confused face. Just when you got back inside he got a call from Dean. “I have to go but the game was very enjoyable. Thank you.”
He extends the finger to you, “please keep this safe for me.” You take it and smile, “I will and you know where to find it.” He nods and with a fluttering of wings he disappears. You move into the living room and take a couple of push pins and place it above the couch. Sitting down you turn on the tv and flip it to an ESPN to catch the highlights of the game. You might have missed something explaining to Castiel what the game is. After a bit you smile and turn red to see Castiel catch the ball then later accidently poke the man’s eye. “It was a good day,” you lean back in the couch.
