Chapter 2
After breakfast was finished, I made my way over to the visitor bay. I can tell that Ann is worried, probably scared that they will not want me, and I will be disappointed or maybe she just doesn't want to see me go. I don't want to leave her either, but I must if it means I have a chance at a new life. The visitor bay was just another word for the second lounge we never use apart from meeting visitors and possible new parents. Many kids are excited to go here while others are more reluctant. This is the first time someone has come asking for me specifically. Most want younger children or those who fit a certain description. I have only two years to go before I'm legally allowed to leave the orphanage and life on my own, same goes for anyone who is going to adopt me. But who knows, maybe I'll enjoy it so much that I don't want to leave.
Arriving at the visitor bay I found a petite woman waiting in one of the comfy chairs. There is no one else but her, no husband. Her dark brown hair was neatly tied up in a professional bun, although a little messy due to the weather I'd say. She was dressed just like a professional businesswoman with a black pencil skirt, white blouse and a black blazer. On her blazer she had her name badge neatly pinned, perfectly straight. I can tell that she is a well-respected woman. On her name badge is the name 'Eliza' imprinted on it.
I let the door fall closed behind me as I stepped more into the room. She looked up at the sound of the door shutting and I watched as a wide smile crossed her lips. Her eyes were the most gorgeous jade green I'd ever seen. I have jade green eyes just like hers however hers had a sparkle in them that I had lost years ago; when I lost my parents. Could she be the one to put this sparkle back into my eyes and my heart? She continued smiling and motioned for me to come closer. Nervous I silently walked over to her, taking a seat in one of the other comfy chairs in front of her.
Hi there, my name is Eliza McSweeney and you're Nova, right?" I nodded my head in reply remaining silent. I'm too nervous to say anything without my voice cracking. I want to have this chance at life but what if she decides that I am not worth the risk?
"I can tell you're nervous, I am too, believe me, or not." I looked up at that. Is she nervous because she knows that my whole family was killed? "I have never adopted a child before, and I want to give you a second chance with a family to call your own."
"Really?" The excitement was evident in my voice as I stared up at her. Can this be real, does she really want me? But what about the killer. I don't want her hurt, she looks like she has a good job, a well-balanced life she shouldn't get involved with me.
"Really." She stated smiling over at me. I let the smallest smile grace my lips, it has been years since I've smiled but I can't let her endanger herself. It was a mistake coming here. I quickly stood up and speed walked over to the door. I don't want anyone else to be killed because someone is after me, I can't let it happen, not anymore.
"Wait!" I stopped. Her voice sounded so weak and frail. I stayed staring at the door afraid of looking into her eyes and falling apart.
"I don't know what it's like to lose your whole family but I do know what it's like to lose someone. My husband was killed in a car accident a few years ago. But no matter what you are not alone in this world, there is always someone who cares about you." She fell silent waiting for me to do something. I remained watching the door as tears threatened to fall. I have discovered that I am not alone, Ann cares for me and now this woman, Eliza, she seems to care for me too. But I don't want either of them getting hurt. I don't want them to be killed like everyone else I have ever cared for. I am the last remaining member of the Wilson family; they were all killed. But what if the killer does think he has killed everyone maybe they forgot about me and I can have a life with someone.
