Chapter 20

I was awoken the next morning by the fresh smell of cooked meat. I rubbed my eyes a little, rubbing the remaining of the Sandman's sand from my eyes. I slowly got up from my bed and looked around. The boys were no longer in their beds. Slowly I made my way to the other room revealing that both Ann and dad were gone too. I guess there is no need for them to worry about me running away here. Not that I could with all these cannibals around. Ignoring the delicious smell of the meat I made my way to the ablution block to take a shower. I already know, without having to look that my hair, that it is a rat's nest that needs to be tamed. I took a nice hot shower, taking my time before getting dressed. On quite wanting to eat human in the morning I decided to take a walkabout. Is it so much to ask for a nice scrambled egg on toast? Apparently so. I walked for several minutes before I came across a generally large cabbing, maybe a mass hall for other events that are held here?

I carefully open the door revealing nothing but darkness. I took a slow step inside searing the wall for the light switch. Once I finally found it I turned it on and turned around. The building was exactly like I thought it was, a mass hall used for events. It is completely bare, with an empty bar on one side and a kitchen on the other through a door-less doorway. Deciding to explore and hoping to find a good hiding place if need be, I walked around. Coming across a door, chained heavily I made my way over to it, intrigued with what could lay behind it. I pulled at the chains several times before determining that it is fully sealed with no way of breaking them. I took a few steps back and kicked at the door, causing the chains to rattle loudly. A muffled noise sounded from behind the door so I pressed my ear against it trying to hear better. It sounds a little like muffled screams? Like people being held in there. Could these be the people who are to be killed and be our food? I took a shocked step back. I did not mean to find these people here; I didn't want to find them. I don't want to think about eating them. I took several more panicked steps back before encountering a wall. I don't remember a wall ever being so close to the door. Shocked I turned around coming face to face with a blue coloured shirt. Started I took a few steps back and instead came face to face with the dark-skinned man from last night on the stage. The one who decided to keep the girl, Marcy for himself.

"What are you doing here, girl?" his booming voice questioned while staring down at me. I wallowed, terrified of the cannibal before me. He is a strong bulky man who could kill me in an instant.

"I- I- I was just-"

"Just what?" He growled loudly.

"I was just walking around. I came across this building and was curious." I stammered out pathetically.

"Ever heard the phrase 'curiosity killed the cat' girl?" I slowly nodded my head. I knew it was a bad idea to come here.

"You're the new girl, right? The brown's adopted daughter?" I nodded again, too afraid to speak. "I head great things about you, they said you learned to fit in well? One of the fastest in the records. But I can't help but wonder if this is all but a façade." I shook my head quickly. I do love my new family; I do enjoy it with them. I just struggle sometimes fitting in a male-dominated household and the killing. I stayed quiet as he continued staring at me.

"Don't let me find you in here again, well say that this was an accident and you didn't know, but if I ever see you here again, I will have no other choice but to tell your parents."

"Does this mean you won't tell them?" I questioned, suddenly finding my voice. He stared at me for a moment before nodding.

"What's your name?" I asked. I might as well know who is saving me from being punished by dad.

"Dave, the organiser of the 'festival of the living'. And who are you, young lady?"

"Nova. My name is nova brown."

"You should get going before your family starts worrying about you." I nodded and sprinted off. I'm more than happy to get out of here, away from the man. I stopped just outside the door and noticed him still staring at me. Deciding not to anger the man and going against him I made my way back to where everyone was. Time to get some breakfast.

--

Once I got back to the main part of the festival and I got a plate piled high with meat my family found me. None of them seemed to know that I had gone for a little walk, all thinking that I had been sleeping all this time. I agreed with them of course, no way I'm going to dig my own grave by telling them. I did sport the man, Dave in the crowd several times. He had Marcy handcuffed to his left hand while she continuously struggled to get out. This must be hard for her, knowing that she is at a festival with so many cannibals and she was going to be killed if it wasn't for Dave. Maybe he isn't so scary as I had initially thought. He did promise to keep my secret and he did save Marcy. Just like how my family saved me. I watched Marcy straggle several more minutes before turning back to my family who was laughing loudly about something. I hope that Marcy will get used to it here, she doesn't know it yet but one day she'll thank him for saving her. I almost don't want to escape here. I like my family, and I even like the people, this is such a nice community if only they didn't kill innocents. I will have to get out to help more innocent people from dying, more like Dawn and the people from yesterday and those locked away.
